My sony vgc va1 developed a lot of viruses

Reformatted the hard disc using a previous version of media center downloaded from net as did not have original discs. Now the display does not fit the screeen ie its too small. looked in the devices manager and could see that the computer now does not recognise the hardware ie the radeon 7000 card so seems to be running without it. Why cannot the computer recognise the pre existing hardware which i have not touched. Have run diagnostic program which also cannot see the existing graphics card or for that matter the wireless conection. How can I get the computer too see the existing graphics card.
Thank you for any help.

Did you use your Key off the CoA label on the back of machine- - If not then you will have an illegal version of the software and not be able to get updates

The reason your hardware is not working is that you need all the drivers for the hardware - which you get from the Sony Vaio support website
not sure what country you are in, but all the drivers should be available here http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DRIVER&SR=nav:service_support:electronics:drivers_software:esup&ref=http://www.sony.com/index.php
I suspect you will need Audio Driver Video Driver - as you have described Network drivers and others drivers
Goto device manager and you will see devices that need drivers labeled yellow ? or yellow !
Press the Windows key (bottom left of the keyboard} and at the same time press the R key, now in the search box that appears - type devmgmt.msc
That will show you drivers missing - they should ALL be available from the Sony Vaio site
Post back again, if you cant find the drivers for your model BUT do check you have legal software - otherwise you will be at a security risk and get virus/malware again.
Also download a Virus scanner - there are free ones available - like avast.com which is my prefered choice, for friends and family
  • Avast -- http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download - to download the file ------- Registration for an annual key http://www.avast.com/en-gb/registration-free-antivirus.php
  • AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/ http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/
  • AVG http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage
  • Two other programs to have Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

For graphics issues I would recomend geting the latest driver from card mfg. For Radeon cards you want to go here ... then just shose your operating system in box 1, radeon in box 2 and 7000 series in box 3, then hit go below that.

I have lost all my freeview channels on my Sony Vaio VGC-VA1,I have tried numerous times to re scan the channels but with no luck, this happened this week end

After the recent retune that all Freeview customers had to do (which failed miserably) this can happen on TV tuners on your pc's aswell.

Try uninstalling the product, and reinstalling, then rescanning. There is a chance this could work.

I cannot boot my vgc-rc310g after removing trogan horse (2ea)

Your laptop still has a virus. From your description, you seem computer savy. What u need to do is you need to boot your system with UBCD ( can be downloaded at www.UBCD4win.com) and search for files with the extension as .exe and delete the ones that look like folders.

then you reboot and try and log into your system. Next, download a software called Combofix. You google it out and get a download. run that to remove the remaining viruses and fix your regsitry.

VGC-VA1 battery repacement

There will be a battery on the motherboard. It will look like a watch battery about the size of a quarter. It should pop out easy.

Is your computer not even loading the manufacturer's screen?

Happy Holidays!
well, if you got experience on reformat OS, do so, Go ahead and format and install the Windows Media Center, there could be something missing from the restored past installation.
Wheather or not you see the right drivers, in control panel, is a best way to reformat the system and if you got all the drivers, install them after the OS installation..
good luck
