Re: How do you remove the starter on a 6.0 chevy engine?
Not too difficult. Remove negative battery cable. remove battery cable from big stud on starter selonoid. Remove small wit from "s" terminal on starter selonoid. Remove starter retaining bolts, and lower starter down.

That's a tough one! If you need routine maintenance parts like an air filter, oil filter or spark plugs just remove the part and write down the number on the part and get the same part number. If you need stuff like a starter, water pump, etc. you need to look for some kind of ID plate on the engine. Are you sure there is a Chevy engine in an Isuzu Rodeo???? Can't imagine how they did that!
Starter located on the engine, from under car look between engine and radiator, where engine connects to transmission, that is the starter. Check links below, press the helpful button Chevy HHR starter location and removal
Generally starters have 2 or 3 bolts and a thick wire coming from the battery and other miscellaneous connections.
You did not specify a vehicle that was on my list, i.e. 1988 Chevy Tahoe.
However, it may be similar to a Suburban R10: REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The following is a general procedure for all trucks covered in this manual, and may vary slightly depending on model and series.
Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Disconnect and tag all wires at the solenoid terminal.
NOTE: Reinstall all nuts as soon as they are removed, since the thread sizes are different.
Remove the front bracket from the starter and the mounting bolts. On engines with a solenoid heat shield, remove the front bracket upper bolt and detach the bracket from the starter.

Remove the front bracket bolt or nut. Lower the starter, front end first, then remove the unit from the truck.
To install:
Position the starter and tighten all bolts as follows:
R/V Series:
Thru-bolts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
Bracket bolt: 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
Nut (gas): 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
Nut (diesel): 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
C/K Series:
Thru-bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
Bracket bolt (diesel): 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
Nut (diesel): 75 inch lbs. (8.5 Nm)
Reconnect all wires.

Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery, then
disconnect the positive battery cable at the starter.

On 4wd models with the 6-cylinder engine:
Remove the front gravel shield.
Detach the oil pressure switch connector.
Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may
cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make
every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective
gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any
other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used
engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.
On 2wd models with the 6-cylinder engine:
Remove the front right wheel.
Remove the front gravel shield.
Remove the exhaust manifold heat insulator.
Remove the exhaust manifold.
Detach the oil pressure switch connector.
Unfasten the remaining electrical connections at the starter
solenoid.
Remove the two nuts holding the starter to the bell housing, then
pull the starter toward the front of the vehicle and out.
1) Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal
2) Raise vehicle front and suitably and safely support.
3) Remove cover from starter wiring (small right angle-like black plastic cover).
3) Loosen large wiring harness (underneath starter) so that it can be moved out of the way.
4) Remove outer nut and wires from solenoid.
5) Remove outer nut and wires wires from starter.
6) Remove two (2) screws retaining plastic flywheel cover and cover.
You will need to do this - otherwise you will be unable to remove the
front bolt holding the starter to the engine block. This cover is a
small black plstic piece located where starter penertates the flywheel
cover.
7) Remove (2) bolts retaining starter to the engine block. One
is accessable towards the front of the starter/vehicile and the other
(long one) is towards the rear of the vehicle - just behind the frame
cross member.
8) Position starter so that if can be dropped down (flywheel gear part first).
9) Reverse the above instructions to install the new starter/solenoid
The starter is very simple to replace, 1st always disconnect the battery, the wires at the starter are hot with 12 volts always present, remove the 2 attaching bolts for the starter to the engine block, then remove the wiring, one heavy cable and a bunch of smaller wires, one of those goes to the starter solenoid, mark it, the others are what are called fuse links and provide power to the rest of the car, clean up everything and then re-install in reverse order.
