Yes you will lose all files when you format. If you want to save your files but cannot open Windows on your computer then remove the hard drive from your computer and connect this hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter. Plug this adapter and hard drive into the USB port of a working computer, this computer will see this as an external storage device, you can then open the folders on this drive and copy/backup the various folders and files. After you have copied/backup your files, you can install the hard drive back into your computer to format and reinstall Windows.
Change the view of your files to details, as this will use less processing power. At the moment your laptop is trying to load all the thumnails and then calculate copying information.
Your timely rating of this soloution is much appriciated.

ok, u know how when it shows up it shows audible, configureation, and record on it, instead of putting the files in audible, put it in record, than when u wanna listen to it, go to record, the songs will be there, hope it works for u too =] good luck
If it were the item you were trying to burn that causes the hanging, in other words a corrupt file, then that maybe the fault, but if it hangs with any other file your trying to burn, either your memory is being used up burning the files or you have a faulty burner, assuming you have tried different makes of dvd disks.
Unless you have a dual processor, it's not wise using the pc for anything else at the same time.
