Question about GE JVM1440 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Surface Light & Vent Fan Won't Work

Microwave surface light and vent fan won't work after trying to replace light bulb. Hate to have to call repairman when cost of repair could be half the price of unit. I replaced the only fuse I could find - was in front / top of unit.
GE web site only shows one fuse to replace so I assumed this was the one. No luck - any chance there is another fuse in back. This unit is mounted and difficult to get to anything else. Prior to removing I would like to verify another fuse?

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

I replaced the light bulbs but they still do not come on and the vent fan will not come on either?

the fan and the surface lights are run through the control via the touch pad. if you tried to replace the bulbs without unplugging the unit 1st you probably shorted the board. this can be checked by lowering the touch control panel by first removing the vent above it to access the panel screw. at this point you can observe the control for burn marks

The vent fan and surface light do not work

1. Check your circuit breaker for this m/w. Reset it.
2. Microwaves usually have 20A fuse inside. It could be broken.

Allways unplug when your working inside a microwave, you will most likely have to replace the bulb again and also the fan, or anything else that is damaged, you will need to inspect the microwave for broken parts.

Il get you a few links to repair parts.

If your fuse is out, the oven will be totally dead.

Not sure what country the poster was from who mentioned that microwaves have or develop 14,000 volts inside...

Here is the US, microwaves only develop about 4,000V DC, not 14,000. Still plenty of voltage and current to be instantly lethal.

That's why I always refer folks to our critical safety information.

Glass Surface Light Lens Cracks from Halogen lights use

The lights do get very hot, so they must be a sufficient distance from the lens. Was there an instruction sheet with the new lens? You may need to adjust the sockets upward. You might call a local GE-authorized servicer to see. Concerning the vent fan, this is a problem with the control panel assembly, which we repair nationwide for $39.95. Details are at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

The control circuits for the cooktop lights and the hood fan are spearate. The problem is indeed with the control unit. It's usually caused by either the filaments shorting when the lamp blows or by removing or installing the bulbs while the oven is still plugged into the power line. We regularly repair these nationwide for $32.50. That would almost certainly be a problem on the control circuit board. If the bulbs happen to short / blow out or if they are removed or installed while the microwave is still plugged in, there is often an arc which causes damage to the board. We repair regularly these boards for such problems for $32.50 nationwide.
