You should first chek out whether driver is installed or not.
To varify taht go to device manager and see if there is any yellow icon in the device list, if so then you are missing driver and need to install the driver.

In the case if you are missing driver and if thats is HD Realtech
Try here to download driver as per your OS

Yes the driver are made for the specific product only. So if the driver is not for your hardware it will raise the error.

So, please follow the link and download the driver which i have sugessted. Just go their and select driver for your operating system. I am again writting the link, don't worry to download its from realtek web.

This will be zip archieve. Unzip these all files in a new folder. Then run installation.

Before making install you should must uninstall your previous driver and then make reboot.

    Thanks

Realtek "high definition" audio drivers cause volume fluctuations

I had this problem with realtek drivers. You can try updating to the latest driver but for me the only solution that truly worked was investing about $100 in a good creative x-fi soundcard and disabling the onboard. I haven't had another sound problem since adding the soundblaster x-fi. Hope this helps.

No sound for my onboard sound card the sound card is realtek product AC97

There are two variations of that driver, AC97 or AC97 HD, both are available from the Realtek website.

Post your results here or any error messages you may receive during install of those drivers so that I may follow up with you if necessary. You may also want to provide additional details such as the make and model of your machine or the type of motherboard so I can verify the exact audio chipset.

Speakers doesnt play

check the motherboard manual and see if it requires a jumper to enable the audio onboard ( if so get the jumper from your motherboard box and seat it on the correct jumpers in the correct position to enable onboard audio ( assuming its onboard audio that you are using ) If not then ensure your sound card is seated firmly and install the correct drivers ( for either the onboard audio or the dedicated sound card ) and then ensure that the speaker cables are connected to the correct connectors on the sound card ( whether onboard or not ) and make sure windows audio is not muted for any of the auxilary lines ie wave etc and if its realtek ensure that you have 2 speakers selected in the HD Control panel and not head phones.

Distorted sound

You may want to download the AC97 HD drivers directly from Realtek. The standard AC97 codecs are also available from the same site.

There is the off chance that there may be a hardware failure but I would try reinstalling those codecs first...

Post your results here.

Failure of realtek audio driver installation

I had the same problem while installing a GeForce 7050M-M motherboard w/AMD quad core processor. I kept getting the message "install Realtek HD Audio driver failure!!" message. After many hours of futility, and reading possible solutions on the internet, I got it working this way: First, go into your cmos setup and disable your onboard audio. Then after you boot up, go into 'control panel' and then 'add/remove programs' and remove any program associated with high definition audio. The Realtek programs that I had tried to install were in mine, so I deleted them. Then I clicked on 'start' and then 'search', and put this in the search window: 'hdaud' for high definition audio. Several files came up, and I deleted them, which put them all in the recycling bin. I didn't empty the bin, in case I screwed up something and had to restore the files later. I then rebooted, and being probably overcautious, let the computer come up and then went back into 'add/delete programs' to make sure there were no HD audio programs in there, and then double checked for any files by going back into 'search' and searching for 'hdaud' files like before. A file somehow had appeared there associated with Realtek, so I deleted it. Then I rebooted, and at reboot went into cmos setup and enabled my onboard audio. When the computer came up, the 'found new hardware' message popped up. When you see this DO NOT let the computer look for the driver. Hit 'cancel', and load your Realtek audio drivers from your setup disc or from whatever location you have them in. You may see the additional message about the driver not loading and your sound not working right, but ignore it, it's because you clicked on 'cancel'. Just let it finish it's install from your setup disc. When mine finished successfully for the first time now, and it prompted me to reboot because of the new drivers just installed, I actually got the 'shutdown' sound out my speakers-the first peep I heard out of them since I started this adventure early yesterday. When the computer came up, lo and behold I had sound. I was about ready to give up and go out and buy a sound card, but stubborness prevailed. So in short review:

1. Disable your onboard audio in CMOS
2. Go into 'add/remove programs' and delete any and all HD audio programs
3. Go into 'search' and type in 'hdaud' and delete those files that come up.
4. Reboot and double check 2 and 3 above.
5. Reboot and go into CMOS and enable your onboard audio.
6. Load your audio drivers from your setup disc-DO NOT LET THE COMPUTER LOOK FOR A DRIVER THRU THE 'FOUND NEW HARDWARE' PROMPT-PRESS CANCEL.
7. Reboot and hopefully, enjoy the sound.

Realtek AC'97 Driver Problems

Well,
This is the last piece of solution I can give you, in case you already knew it, please ignore.

Your motherboard has a 6-channel non-HD audio, consequently you might have probably downloaded drivers meant for 2 or 4 channel or HD ones.

The appropriate driver for your motherboard is
Realtek ALC650
you can download it here:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/NETWORK-CARD/REALTEK/ALC650-v349-02092003-Win-98-ME-2k-XP.shtml
Since it is just 6MB , I suggest you give it a try as a last option.
Hope it help !
