While Windows XP offers support to a great range of hardware the problem still may be with the drivers, if it was working good with the earlier version of the OS. you may try to download the updated version of the drivers from www.intel.co.in or else from different websites like www.driversguide.com, etc.

check the series, is it really require realtek? because the driver doesn't depends on the windows XP, but the type, model and series of motherboard or chipset brand....
anyway, realtek doesnt written on the device manager,
check to your control panel - sound and audio device, is all enabled?or does any volume elements are muted..
in control panel go to sound and audio devices. in this you can test all the audio hardware and mic also. under voice tab there is also an option for test hardware.
you said that you cannot use the mic in skype or google talk. i think that you didn't configure the mic properties in those software. just go to start->all programs->accessories->entertainment->sound recording. just record ur voice using mic. if it works then the problem is with the configuration of the software skype and gtalk hope this helps.
dear jeff, please check if it works when using earphones.
if u are using win-xp home editon service pack2, some onboard sound cards do not function properly, meaning that installation of drivers appears to be working fine, but the internal handling leads to a no sound problem. hook up your laptop to the internet and get all available windows updates from microsoft.com using the automatic update function, reboot and set the volume like described in 1st solution1
