The first screen (select Language) came on but then the screen went blank. Every time we turn on the power it shows the input that the tv is on but the screen goes blank after 1 second. I pluged the cable directly and I get channel 2 picture and sound for 1 second then the screen goes blank but the sound continues. Any ideas?
If I shine a flashlight on the screen you can see a faint image on the screen.

Re: we just set up our 37 in sharp and get no picture
I had this problem on my 42" Philips. Just got it yesterday and worked fine on the tv stand. As soon as I mounted the TV to the wall via wall mount system, I had the exact same issue you did. Figured it out today.
The wall mount was putting pressure against the center of the back of the tv (tv set had a slightly rounded back plate, and the mount was a flat plate). As soon as I put spacers (part of the wall mount hardware set) between the wall mount braket and the tv so there was no contact except at the mounting holes, the tv worked fine.
My theory is the pressure pushed the tv back plate against some board components which caused them to overheat (no air flow); or put pressure on internal connectors. I dont know.

You haven't mentioned the model no. of your TV. Nonetheless, the
reset procedure for the model nos. 42PFL7409/98 / 42PFL7409S/98 goes
1- Press Home,
2- Select [Setup] > [Installation] > [Factory
3- Press play to enter the [Factory settings]
[Reset] is highlighted,
4- Press OK to reset to default settings.
5- Press Home to exit.
The reset procedure may differ for other model nos.
Furthermore, Press the "Menu" button to access the menu, and select "TV Settings"
and then "Picture" to bring up the picture settings. Adjust the color,
brightness, sharpness and other settings if the picture seems off.
Select "Dynamic Contrast" to have the contrast adjust to screen changes
and "Digital Noise Reduction" to cut down on outside interference and
reduce noise in the signal. On the "Installation" menu, select "Reset
AV Settings" to have the settings reset to their factory defaults.
That is normal. Most HDTV's have a format or picture size option on the remote or menu. It will give you options like full, stretch ot zoom to fill in the blank spots. The problem is those settings can also distort the picture size so people look funny.
I have the same problem with my 37" HP which is the same as Sharp Aquos, it's bad backlight inverter boards, the screen comes on for a second then nothing, no menu, no channel change indicator then turn it off and you hear the clicking of the power supply about 10 seconds after.
