I can't turn my Dell Axim of with the power button but can by disconnecting the battery. The screen show blue back ground with the Dell Icon. If I do a soft reset a window pops up advising me "To clear all memory press the button to the immediate left of the navigation button" or ""to cancel this operation by pressing the button to the immediated right of the navigation button." Pressing the left button sounds like it would take me to a hard reset. I would like to avoid doing this. Pressing the right button takes me back to the Dell screen and sits. A soft reset takes me back to the same choises. Is there a way out of this with out doing a hard reset?
With much regret I did a hard reset. It appeared that some how in my carrying case that hard reset got started and I could not get it out of the lock up with out taking it clear through. I hadn't backed up for a couple of month but didn't loose much data. Thanks for the follow up.

Some people have said that the original ppc2002 ROM has battery draining problems. If this is something new, perhaps it is a bad battery. Ebay for a new one.
If you think it might be a software problem and you have ppc2002-also known as Windows Mobile 2002, upgrade your Axim with the A04 ROM:http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R63937&SystemID=PDA_AXIM_X5&servicetag=&os=PPC&osl=en&deviceid=4434&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=7&fileid=82832
The Axim X5 can only go up to Windows Mobile 2003 (Mobile 5 is the one after this).
My suggestion is sell the REALLY great Socket card and get one that works with your X5 (you have either Pocket PC 2002 or Windows Mobile 2003) If you Ebay search Dell TrueMobile, you'll find the card that works with either.
I need mine too, so it looks like we'll have a bidding war.
Holding down the record button on these units turns the backlight on and off, since this is hardware controlled you should try this first.
If you've performed a hard reset and held down record then this is most likely a physical fault, check with Dell to find out your warranty status and find out about the availability of replacement parts.
If it isn't completely broken, I would recommend a few things:
1.hold down the power button, and push reset. It will ask you if you want to wipe the contents of your device. Push the button to cancel.
2.Pull the main battery and the backup battery. This will wipe everything on your device but it may get it up and running again.
Chances are there is a flash update on Dell's support site http:\\support.dell.com that will take care of this issue.
Hope that helps!
