you can't remove them..you can only run chkdsk from the windows environment..resurfacing drives is old school, and not usual for high density drives.

If you want want, go to your command prompt. Either start, programs, accessories or start, run, cmd and hit ok. Just type chkdsk /f and the system will tell you it can't run it right now. It will ask you if you want it to run the next time your pc starts up. Just type y and hit enter. Close the window and restart your pc. If there are bad sectors though it is time to start thinking about a new hard drive.

Firstly once a disk has bad sectors ,it is on the way out ,so back up your data .

if you download the disc utility from the makers website (free) for your drive , sometimes it can recover the bad sectors and the data .

it may be that you only have a couple of bad sectors, in which case, its not so much an issue ,just leave them alone, but as you get more & more the drive is on its way out .
if you have critical data on it, replace the drive now ,before you cant get into.
or you may live to regret it .

good luck
Terry

Try scandisk from your pc. bad secotors are a sigh that your hard drive is going out. I would not use a hard drive that reads bad secotors. scan it first with AVG
http://avg.download-go.com/ its free.

Hard drive errors

If your had drive is getting lost clusters when you run scan disk, it means the hard disk is nearly worn out Whilst scan disk will repair and locl out these bad sectors so data is not written to these areas, the number of bad sectors will increase and it is adiseable to back up your data frequently so you won't lose your data when the hard drive fails completely.
I recommend you replace this hard drive as soon as possible and install Windows on the new hard drive plus the computer's device drivers, your programs and data. You do not want the hard drive failing at an inconvient time.

Compaq Desktop won't boot up.

Do you have your Vista installation disc? If so, you can boot from that and then run the Windows RE troubleshooter, which should be able to test your hard drive and maybe even try to repair it.

How many times a harddisk can be formatted?

hi,

in a long course of use it is quite natural to format the harddisk...

(due to viruses or something like that)

when formatting,
the operating system needs a file system to organise data into files and folders....
so they can be managed effectively...
when formatting it clears a particular area called a partition then divides it into sectors, tracks formed by the combination of these sectors, and cylinders...

sector is the smallest data block in hard disk an operating system can manage...

if not frequent formatting a hard disk not at all a problem....

you need not worry about the hard disk or its performace....

if this one help please give a vote....

Pxe-e61 media test failure. i have managed to get the computer into safe mode but will not run in normal mode why is this and how can i fix it?

This issue is often caused by either an incorrect setting in bios or a bad boot device, such as a bad hard disk drive. To resolve this issue, run scandisk to check if the hard drive have develop a bad sector. Double click mycomputer and right click drive C: and select properties, tools, check now and check the the two options in the check this option windows and reboot your computer. During the reboot of computer the scandisk is check your harddisk after the scandisk finished scanning you can read the result if you see the bad sector or cluster found it's mean that your hard drive is damage in you need to replace it to correct the error. But if no bad sector found try to remove the software or hardware that you installed before the problem is occured go to control panel then add and remove software. if you have a registry scanner software like pctools registry mechanic try to run it to fix the problem in the registry.

a low level format could revive the disk - download the disk utility from the disk website (e.g if it is a quantum load the disk manager from quantum site & run on the disk - follow screen instructions)
hope this helps
