The problem is that the output transistor(s) are shorted causing the unit to shutdown in what is called "protect" mode. This is a common failue and should be easily repaired by a service shop for about $25-$40 in parts plus labor.

Sony GX800ES protector

Make sure none of the speaker wires are touching each other. If they are, it will short out the stereo which triggers protection mode and cuts out all of the sound.

The 3 front speakers have started to buzz. When I unplug them in moves to the rear 2 speakers. I orginally thought it was the speakers so I got new ones, same problem. Not sure if it is my reciever getting...

This is a grounding issue either between pieces of equipment or inside the receiver itself.
There are other possible causes, but this will almost always be a grounding issue.
I recommend unplugging everything and hooking it up piece by piece till the buzz return to isolate the issue.
IE - start with nothing but the receiver and speakers hooked up. Turn on the radio. If the speakers buzz, the receiver has an issue and needs to be repaired or replaced.

If there's no buzz, hook up the DVD player. If the buzz returns, there's some issue between the DVD and the receiver....
If the buzz hasn't returned, hook up the.....<insert name of next piece of equipment here>
you get the idea.

Every time I try to turn on my onkyo receiver it turns off instantly

the reason why the receiver probably keep turning off is that the systems come with overload protector to keep one from burning or short the systems out so it shut its self off. make sure you have the speaker wires is connected properly, its very important that you do although the receiver has 0% tolerance when it come to speakers hook up. positive from speaker to positive connector behind reciever; same as negative. double check all speakers wires. repost if that not an issue

My reciever turns itself off

You most likey have a wire short on your center or rear surround speakers. The wire short will be between the + and - points of the speaker wire.

To find the problem speaker, disconnect one of the 3 speakers at a time from the back of the sony and see if the problem goes away. Once you identified the offending speaker, check both the sony side and speaker side for the short. The small wire strands are hard to see and it only takes one to trip the protection mode, so look carefully.

Protector flashing

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.
