Hi,

This problem is usually associated with the Bluray drive or more specifically the optical laser on the drive which is failing to read the disk. Sony charge $150 for this repair if the console is outside warranty.

You could try cleaning the lens on the laser as this can work sometimes but this requires you to open the console and most often the lens is faulty and needs to be changed. For more information on the lens and how to access it either to change it or clean it please see this FixYa Tip.

PS3 does not read the discs....

Here's two previous posts with similar problems..

This problem does not mean a disk drive2_bing.gif has broke 90% of the time, the most common issue is the ps32_bing.gif files being corrupt. To solve this problem firstly back up the data on your ps3. Go to system settings> backup and follow the appropriate settings,i advise using a usb stick or hard drive to back up your data.
Secondly under system settings go to restore ps3 and follow instructions. This will erase all the data on your ps3 and restore it to its factory default, this will restore all the original ps3 files, it will basically install the ps3 OS again.
After re- installing the ps3 install the latest updates and try your disk again.
If your ps3 now recognizes a disk go back to system setting> backup, select restore previous back up and all your saved data will be imported from the hard disk. Sony2_bing.gif does state that not all saved data can be imported e.g.copy righted content, however i faced no problems and was able to access all saved data including saved games2_bing.gif when restoring.
If this solution does not work contact song for further assistance, if this solution does not work it is likely to be hardware support, usually the lens that reads the disk, sony will instruct you on who to contact to repair the fault machine. When out of warranty their is usually a cost unless it is recognized manufacturing fault.

I have the now famouss problem myself and reading about it made me realise that there are a lot of people living this hell. I want to make an official list of player having this problem to see the magnitude of it.

The problem beiing: You played mw2 (or another game) with the latess update installed on your ps3 and at some point it froze. tried pressing the PS button but nothing happened. You had to hold the power button to reset it or resolve to switch the back switch off/on. Only to get this same problem over and over again. you can t play blu ray2_bing.gif on your ps3 and/or get the error 80010514. from time to time it will play those blu ray only to start the whole problem again.

your blu ray lens is not dead.. the problem seems to come from another part. It could be a corrupted SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE caused by Sony's 'Online' Updates.

Ps3 wont reconize any discs after freezing

The error code 80710102 you are getting due to a possible connectivity issue of your PS3, since you have not specified in your problem how are you trying to connect your PS3 to internet so i am unable to assist you on that front

For the problem related to discs not playing is becuase ps3 files being corrupt.

1) First take a back up of your data on PS3 - Go to system settings> backup and follow the appropriate settings,i suggest use a usb stick or hard drive to back up your data.

2) Under system settings go to restore ps3 and follow instructions. This will erase all the data on your ps3 and restore it to its factory default, this will restore all the original ps3 files.

3) Once the PS3 install has completed then try updating your PS3 to latest firmware available, now try playing your discs

4) If your ps3 now plays games and dvds go back to system setting> backup, select restore previous back up and all your saved data will be imported from the hard disk, please note: you may not be able to restore any copyright stuff which you could have purchased.

5) If the above steps do not work, kindly send your PS3 for repairs to Sony Customer Service

Hope This Helps

Wont play when i insert disks only the games on there

I had a similar problem. My PS3 did not start the disk based games. Those disk based games were not visible in the game menu.

I did not have problems with the normal movie DVDs or movie Blu Rays. Those were working fine. Also downloaded games were working ok.

In case you have the similar problem, you should try the following steps;

The PS3 has a special Recovery Menu, which you can access in the following way;:

1. Turn off Playstation 3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION 3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION 3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION 3 System

Select option "Rebuild Database".

After PS3 has executed the DB rebuilding operation, the disc games will be visible again in the menu and are starting automatically when inserted to PS3.

My PS3's hard disk file system is corrupted

There is an alternate way to restore your HDD. Turn off your system and when u see the red light, hold the power button in front until you hear a total of 4 beeps (1 alone, 1 alone, 2 together). It usually works on second try. it should show a screen and say hook up controller with a usb cord. Then it should show i think 6 options. Choose the restore option. it should work.

Hope it works and wish you all the best!
P.S.- I just got the 80010514 error on my ps3 and my ps3 games dont work anymore :(
