Reinstall iTunes. That's the easiest way to fix this problem. But don't uninstall it. Just download the latest version from Apple run it and restart your computer.

I am confused as to how to start to get my ipod touch connected to my laptop what do i do

Download the latest version of itunes then install it on your computer. Then restart the computer and open up itunes. Then connect the ipod to the usb port and click on create new user. Then type a name you want to use. Then click on the music folder and press sync button to download music from your laptop to ipod.

Iforgot my lock combination for the ipod

You have to restore the ipod using itunes. An apple rep will tell you the same thing. It sucks to loose your music if you don't have all of the music on your computer; and that people assume just because you forgot your password you stole it. Hope this information is helpful to your issue :)

Ipod shown in recovery mode when plugged into new itunes version

Each iPod usually only syncs up to 1 computer. try downloading a program called idump. It allows you to take all of your music and files off the ipod and onto the computer, without having to restore. Then you'll have to restore the ipod, and put all the songs back onto it.
