My daughter was working on a project in our hotel room. The drive fell 1.5 ft to the carpet and the drive basically now does not work.. you can hear the motor inside make about 10 attempts to start then goes silent.. the light does remain on.. and it is not recognized on the computer as a drive at all.

Any thoughts on resetting the drive or is this drive toast. It contains all her files (MAC).

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Hi, I accidentally dropped my 2 tb Seagate expansion disc and now its making funny noises andm it wont even read on my windows 8 computer. Can some 1 help me please?

unfortunately it appears that the internals are shot
if the funny noise is a clicking sound or squeal then the repair is a new hd unit as they are generally not repairable.

Not a DIY task. You need a professional with data recovery skills. There are few good ones around.

Hard drives are easily damaged when dropped and cannot be repaired.
You need a new hard drive.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drived BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services..

Data Recovery from Seagate Desktop Expansion 500GB External Hard

This is a solution I have used in the past and it has worked. It's a Seagate Recover utility for end users.

If the data is absolutley critical and very valuable, you can send it to Seagate and they are very good at recovery as well. It gets a little pricey at $800, but I too have had to use that as well for mission critical data I could not afford to lose.

Seagate Freeagent Dropped

Unfortunately what you are describing is a damaged platter inside the hard drive. You may be able to get a technician to recover some data but generally this means the drive is gone forever.

Lightly Dropped Seagate 100GB External Hard Drive

Unfortunately, this probably means the read/write heads were jarred and can no longer function properly. That's usually fixable, but it's a very expensive fix because the parts are inside the hard drive and the data surfaces are very delicate... Most people are better off simply replacing the hard drive unless the data is absolutely vital.
