Adjusting the Scan Contrast or the Image Quality (Fax Resolution)
Adjusting the Scan Contrast

Contrast is the degree of difference between light and dark. Increasing the scan contrast setting further blackens dark areas and whitens bright areas, whereas decreasing the contrast setting reduces the difference between bright and dark areas. You can adjust the contrast among three contrast levels.

  1. Press the button.

  2. Press the button.

  3. Press the (left) or (right) button to select the contrast.

Adjusting the Image Quality (Fax Resolution)

You can adjust the image quality (fax resolution) of the document you send. Adjust the image quality according to the type of document you are sending.

  1. Press the button.

  2. Press the button two times.

  3. Press the l_mark.jpg (left) or r_mark.jpg (right) button to select the resolution.

HP photosmart C4200 - alignment disable

I've run into this problem. The first simple thing to look at is the aligment page itself. Does it have colors on it or is it strictly greyscale/black and white? If your color cartridge is empty/a knockoff/not installed correctly, the printer will just print the alignment page in black/white and not necessarily notify you of a problem. However, the cartridges won't align if the aligment page isn't printed in color.

This is clearly a screw-up by HP, because there is nothing to notify you of this problem in the software or manual. The printer will automatically print an aligment page, and then tell you to scan it. If they did it right there would be some error message notifying the user that it couldn't print an aligment page rather than print one that is worse than useless.
