Question about Dell Dimension 9150 (DIM915MIN) PC Desktop

2 Answers

Power failure. This machine fails to power up. Have followed Dell's web based diagnostics. The 'Flea power' (indicates 3.3V rail is alive) green LED is on. Have replaced PSU with brand new replacement, and removed all peripherals inc RAM DIMM's etc. Mobo appears to be 'dead'. no BIOS fault code LED's light as would be expected. I would be grateful for a schematic of mobo so I can look for failed power up components, or a source to purchase a replacement mobo. CPU and RAM appear to be OK. All fans spin ok when plugged into another (non Dell) mobo. Power on button does have continuity when pressed. I presume I cannot stick any old Mobo in as the installation of Windows XP will not validate correctly and the drivers will be different. Your help is appreciated. Many thanks

    Thanks Fawbushra

You confirmed my diagnosis. It's just a shame that the mobo can't be repaired to component level.

The PSU appears to be ok, would you change it as a matter of course? I normally do, but am trying to keep costs down for the owner.

    Thanks again.

Mobo and ps go hand in hand, usually, since the nature of power glitches causes serial injuries to them both.

if the system will not power on, I would suggest a new power supply as the first troubleshooting option as they are about 1/3 the price of the motherboard. The Flea Power indication on the motherboard only indicates power is reaching the board, not if all needed voltages are being received.
Normally on a Dell, if you are getting power then when you attempt to power on, you usually get a power LED indication on the power button. Solid Green/Blue is normal, Flashing Amber is Power supply bus failure, Solid Amber is normally a motherboard.
If you haven't bypassed the UPS and connected direct to the outlet, I would try that 1st, as the UPS could be the failure too.

Where can I find No Post Diagnostic information for my Dell Desktop/MiniTower...

Most Dell desktop/minitower system have the ability to have no POST failure diagnostics that can assist you in determining exactly what has failed in the system making part replacement easier.
For older Dells that have diag LEDs on the back of the system (labeled ABCD), here is the table indicating diagnostic faults:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/adtshoot.htm#wp1052387
For Newer systems where the LEDs are on the front panel (Labeled 1234) the table is here:

Power LED indications are here:

My dell 4600c monitor will only show a picture when i start or restart it with the monitor power button. it is only on for about 1.5 seconds each time.

If the tower power LED is a Steady Green and the Diagnostic LEDs on the Back are all Green then the monitor itself appears to be the failure point. See if issue occurs with a different monitor. If the tower LEDs are not all green, then reply with the indications

sounds like a motherboard failure.
Basic troubleshooting, disconnect all external connections except power, see if indications change, if no go remove all expansion cards see if any change, if no go disconnect all drives see if any change. If none, then motherboard.
If at any step you get a change in indications, then see if you can isolate the faulty item

The power LED light is orange instead of green and it won't turn on

Hi! for most dell machines if the power led is orange its an indication of a issue with the ram, try to reseat the ram first.if that doesnt work normally for dimension 4600, there are diagnostic lights that are located at the back panel of the machine, they are four bicolor lights(amber and green) You can determine the exact problem by checking these lights and you can interpret them by going to this website: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/adtshoot.htm#1112886 hope this helps...

Screen will not come on hard drive light no light checked power supply is ok

Things to check:
  1. Power led on the front of the tower, it should be solid green when on. Flashing Amber is generally an indication of a bad power supply inside the tower
  2. Power LED Solid AMBER indicates system is not finishing the power on self test (POST) and you remove all connections from the tower except power and try turning on again. If no change, remove all PCI and PCI-E cards from system, try again, no change replace motherboard.
  3. On the back of the tower are 4 diagnostic LEDs near the ps2 ports marked ABCD, after the POST, during a normal boot the will flash in several sequences and with boot is finished all 4 should be green. If they stop an a different pattern, then that indicates a failure Yellow Yellow Green Green indicate bad RAM for example
  4. If the LEDs on front and back are Green then the system appears to be booting but the monitor display is not functional

I'm not clear about the blinking amber light you are referring to. Is it on the computer or the monitor.
I checked Dell's web site for the service manual for this computer model, & found this document:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/sm/adtshoot.htm#1102195

If the blinking amber light is on the monitor, check the connection between it & the computer itself. Make sure the cable is not damaged & that it does not have any broken pins in the socket.

Dell Dimension 2400 with steady amber power light and diagnostic lights of ABC green and D off. What could be the problem?

Steady amber power LED is indicative of a problem with the motherboard. Remove all external connections except power, remove all PCI Cards, ram, disconnect power from all drives, turn on see if power LED is still steady amber. If it is, more than likely the motherboard has a failure. Also check to see if the CPU heatsink is firmly seated (The plastic retainer has been known to fail causing the CPU to overheat)

Diagnostic Indicator

Beep codes and power LED status are pre-post errors. Usually beep codes indicate a problem with a memory module. Power LED is solid green for normal operation. Solid or blinking Amber color power LED indicates a power distribution problem.

Dell Dimension 9100 will not power up

Most likely the power supply have failed. Although the system is getting some power to the Motherboard (Flea power indication on motherboard) there are at least 5 different voltages the power supply provides for the system. Losing any one can cause a no power situation like you describe.

A standard ATX power supply should resolve (It is the 1st item I'd replace, both because it is the 1st point of failure and the cheapest to replace)

Here is one ATX power supply:
