The keypad on my microwave is getting worse and worse. My question is should I replace the keypad or the microwave? If I choose to replace the keypad is it something I can do myself? If I replace the microwave, can I find one that will fit in the spot over the range?

If it will start automatically without using the 'start' button, the 'start' button must be bad. If the door sensing switch was bad, it wouldn't start at all. It needs a new keypad. The most common cause of a keypad failure is from spraying a cleaner on it instead of using a just barely damp cloth to clean it. The liquid can run down the front of the laminated keypad and get into the bottom and seep up into the lamination....
Pressing the Clear/Pause button works. Sometimes. Most of the time, about a microsecond after pressing Clear/Pause, it goes right back to def1. Most of the time, pressing ANY button doesn't work. Usually takes me 10 to 20 tries to get anything to work. My microwave is about 3 months old. I will never buy Emerson again.
We had this same problem. I went on youtube and there is one link called "Quick Fix for GE Microwave." The guys shows how to take the panel off. You take the connectors off and put the keypad on the table and pull the ribbon tab out of the connector (don't take the connector out of the board, it doesn't some out). Then you put the ribbon tab back into the connector and it works. The ribbon tab just needed to be reseated. The whole thing took about 5 minutes. I was ready to listen to all these other people and go out and buy a new keypad. . .even worse. . I was ready to pay $500 for a new microwave. No way. . it's done. My wife thinks I'm so amazing blah blah.
F3 means : Short circuit on key panel (your touch pad).
You get F3 error if a shorted key panel is detected for more than 60 seconds.
Solution: . Replace key panel (touch pad).
Try first unpluggign power cord for five minutes.
If you think that the problem may had been caused by water inside the keypad you can try using an hairdryer on the keypad, taking care not to melt the keypad plastic. If that does not work, then replace the keypad.
well if you find out that your microwave keypad is not working, like those numbers or letters are not working, there's a 16 or 8 plug cords wire attach to the keypad and the motherboard.you need to clean that with normal water temperture.than dry it for about 10-20 minutes.
Your Control Key Pad is a circuit with each function and button a switch. The pad on your TV Remote, and Telephone is no different. The Key Pad is failing, It will only get worse. Determine if you can replace the Touch (Key) Pad. Not the Control Circuit, just the Touch Pad. Sometimes you can get it seperate. It connects by a Flex Cable to the Control Circuit.
