Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra MP3 Player Logo
Posted on Mar 16, 2008

My nomad jukebox zen xrtra (creative) isnt starting

When i start it with just the battery, it stays on the eax startup logo, then after a few minutes of weird clicking, it takes me to a menu with this on it:

rescue mode v1.13
boot v1.2, HW v0.0.1
1:clean up
2:format all
3:reload OS
4:reboot

when i choose clean up, nothing happens, when i choose format all or reload os, it says "harddisk problem"

when i have the player hooked up to the computer or into an outlet, it repeats the start-up process described above (without the menu part) over and over until i unplug it.

i tried using the reset button but it does nothing but restart it, which doesnt help me at all. PLEASE! I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO BUY A NEW MP3 PLAYER!!! HELP ME OUT!!!

ps - this problem started when i was listening to a track on it, but it randomly started playing about one second of another song, that was played shortly beforehand, at random times. i soon got annoyed with this so i tried skipping the song to see if that would make it stop, but when i pressed the next button it froze up and nothing worked. i tried turning it off and that wouldnt even work, so i ended up having to just take out the battery and put it back it, but when i did, the whole long wait and useless menu thing happend.

I'm having same problems. Reset doesn't solve issue. Buttons sometimes work, sometimes not. Bought as reconditioned item. Can anyone advise if reinstallation of OS works and if so where to download OS.

    Thanks tullyb

This has happened to me on two different Zen Xtras. I ended up replacing the first, and now its happened again. I'd love to at least be able to get the music off of it so I don't have to re-build my collection from scratch again.

The exact same thing happened to me and i solved it by dropping the unit from about 6 inches onto my desk.
It made a horrible thud butI think it must have had something stuck because now it all works fine again.
Hope it helps

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra

Whirring noise = bad, probably needs to be replaced, BUT:
Uninstall everything from your PC, reboot, reinstall driver and the Explorer (I do not use MediaSource, only the Explorer).

If it didn't work out follow these steps:

1. Uninstall Creative Media Source and all related software.
2. Install the driver. In the installation CD the driver is usually in \Drivers\English
3. Turn on the Nomad an connect it to the PC.
4. Install MediaSource(the program requires that you have the nomad connected while installing)
5. Install MediaSource plugin
6. Try transferring files.

If you?re still running into problem know that there are other programs capable of handling MediaSource?s functions, such as - Portable Audio Devices Power Toy , NomadSync, Real player, and there?s also a Zen plugin for the Winamp.

Good luck!

Buttons won't work

Reset - do the four things in svc mode

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard

60GB Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra stuck in startup loop

mine did the same until i got a new power supply. it requires a 5volt dc pos tip charger with 20 watts. a universal 3-7.5v 2amp charger from radioshack does the trick. make sure the tip is yellow for the charger.

My Nomad zen xtra 40gb is stock !!!

It sounds like the hard drive may be damaged. Have you tried to put it in recovery mode?

Put a paperclip in the reset hole while holding down the play button until you see the screen go to recovery mode. Then try the format option; this will erase all your files but it will tell you if you need a new hard drive.

Nomad jukebox 40GB

Have you tried pushing the reset button on the side as you power it up?

It's possible that you need to replace the hard drive or reload the firmware. Or both.
