Question about Belkin (F5D7231-4) Wireless Router

1 Answer

Router keeps losing its security settings

Hi
I have set my router to have a password, SSID not broadcasting, have also set up Security key to make the network secure from prying eyes, however, every few hours the security just deletes itself and it goes back to factory settings and I have to keep resetting it.
Is there any solution for this?
Thanks
Gill

Check for updated firmware on the belkin website. It may be a firmware issue that has been patched with that particular version.

SSID

Hi John,

The SSID is either broadcast or sheilded, depending on whether the owner wanted to broadcast it or not. Many people often choose to shield the SSID as another layer of security for their WiFi. The SSID is needed to recieve a prompt for security keys, so without the SSID, you're stuck to look for another WiFi signal.

If the WiFi router is accessible to you - that is; you own it - you can access the router's setup page via any computer that is either 1) physically connect via network cable, or 2) connected via WiFi. You will need to point your browser at the router's setup page - often 192.168.0.1 is used. You will be prompted for a username and password. You didn't provide the model number of your router, but according to this Arris Router manual I found, if it was not changed from the factory default by the user - it will be "admin" and "password" (without the quotes). From here, you would go to the wireless settings to read or change the SSID and security settings.

If the router refuses the admin / password credentials, that means that it has been changed from the factory defaults. It will not be possible to view the router settings, but you can return the router back to the factory settings by locating the reset button on the device itself. With a paper clip or ball point pen, press and hold the reset button for several seconds, then release. This will remove all customizations to the router settings.

Using the manual as a guide, you can edit any of the settings as desired, but you should at least change the login password to something unique and set the WiFi security to WPA with a security key (word) that does not appear in the dictionary. Use WEP security *only* if there is no other type offered, as WEP security can be hack in under a minute or two by computer. As you can see, not broadcasting the SSID provides an additional layer of security. You can broadcast it is you wish.

Finally, record the the IP address, username, password, SSID, security type and key and attach to the underside of the router. Should you forget the info needed to access it in the future, you'll find everything you need on the label.

I hope this helps & good luck!

How do I secure my Dynamode BR 6004 WG1 Iam a

To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, you need to at least configure the wireless router with encryption, and the SSID, and change the router's default login password.
Please follow these instructions :-

To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router’s wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router’s wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA). The encryption key can be easily set up using a passphrase (it can be an alpha numeric phrase or words).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.
To access the Internet you need to connect the DSL or cable modem to the WAN (Internet) port on the wireless router.

2.Enter the username and password(default password is admin and leave the username blank)
3.Click Wireless and then fill the sections as mentioned:
Wireless-Enabled
Wireless Netowrk Name-As per your choice
Wireless Channel-6-2.442GHz
Wireless SSID broadcast-Enabled and click Save settings

4.Click Wireless Security and fill the sections
Wireless Security-Enabled
Security Mode-WPA pres-shared key (as you want non wep password)

How do i set a password?

Follow these rules for a secured WLAN
connect to your router as admin using Lan cable.
Set A router password. (if not already set)
Change your SSID from standard name
Consider do not broadcast SSID
In wireless setting select WPA-PSK security protocol
Create a Passphrase to be used as key (write it down)
save and use new setting in every connected device of this network.
I recommend first broadcast your network with WPA-PSK password.
Find your network with your clients (PC, Console, print server) use pw to connect in secured way.
Be sure to set client network properties to "connect to this network even if not broadcasting"
For increased security modify your network in Router to "No broadcast"

the key number will be listed in the router settings as you must have security enabled in the router, if you cannot find it then simply reset the router at the rear of the unit and start again as there will be no security key number and all the settings will be back to factory default.
