Question about Denon DRM-740 Single Dual Cassette Deck
I recently returned from Peace Corps service and unpacked my stored Denon DRM-740 and found that the motor wont drive the tape when it is in play mode. The motor takes up the slack in the tape and then stops. In fast forward or rewind there is no problem driving the tape. What is the likely cause of the problem? How much repair likely cost? And is this a repair I could do on my own with little electronics repare expierence? Thanks. Ecuador PC My problem is similar to this past post. The deck fast forwards and rewinds just fine, but once the play button is pushed, the play head engages for a split second and then shuts down. I've cleaned it twice and still no-go. It had been working perfectly prior to the current problem. Thanks, Jack
I had a similar problem with A Mitsubishi cassette deck, several years ago.
The actual problem, is a sticking switch/relay/solenoid whichevers applicable in your case.
Without even opening up the casing or tampering with the Unit.
Try constant Stop/fast forward. Stop/rewind. power Off/On. You,ll find after several attempts, the deck will find it,s own stability level. and unstick whatever it is, thats jammed or seized.
As you have,nt used for a long period of time. You,ve gotta Coax it back to full functionality.
If you,ve got lots of patience, you,ll find that this will work.

Hmmm...sounds like the transport motor/foot are stuck..open it up, and inspect around those items(where the tape actually clamps down) and see if you can see anything in there. Might even be a bug, no fooling..
as to repairs..you are most likely talking some major money, and a long time in the repair depot, which I believe is in Rio..I'll check that for you while you do this part.

SOURCE: Denon DRM 740 tape does not play
Just bought a unit from a thrift store. Found same problem; FF & RW OK, but play engages then stops. Also noticed buzzing noise when power turned on. Opened unit, found broken capstan drive belt. FF & RW driven from different motor. Buzz was drive motor running freely with no load - when power is on, capstan is driven all the time for fast play/record start. Replaced with rubber band, and it works --- now looking for replacement belt.
