Denon DRM 740 tape does not play

I recently returned from Peace Corps service and unpacked my stored Denon DRM-740 and found that the motor wont drive the tape when it is in play mode. The motor takes up the slack in the tape and then stops. In fast forward or rewind there is no problem driving the tape. What is the likely cause of the problem? How much repair likely cost? And is this a repair I could do on my own with little electronics repare expierence? Thanks. Ecuador PC My problem is similar to this past post. The deck fast forwards and rewinds just fine, but once the play button is pushed, the play head engages for a split second and then shuts down. I've cleaned it twice and still no-go. It had been working perfectly prior to the current problem. Thanks, Jack

Hi,
I had a similar problem with A Mitsubishi cassette deck, several years ago.
The actual problem, is a sticking switch/relay/solenoid whichevers applicable in your case.
Without even opening up the casing or tampering with the Unit.
Try constant Stop/fast forward. Stop/rewind. power Off/On. You,ll find after several attempts, the deck will find it,s own stability level. and unstick whatever it is, thats jammed or seized.
As you have,nt used for a long period of time. You,ve gotta Coax it back to full functionality.

If you,ve got lots of patience, you,ll find that this will work.

The motor apply a different force when it does rewind/forware then when is in play mode. Also in play mode the tape is pulled from traction rubber weel , not only by motor.

As posted by my friend IB check that motor is running in play mode when no tape is in. To do this locate and press the sensor pins inside deck, so that you can press play with no tape in.
alternatively put a cassette with no tape inside the deck, leaving deck door open (if the casset fit in with door open), or removing door.
If the motor does not spin main tractor when play is pushed, then probably it is a problem with mechanics, they do not start motor in play mode.
If the motor spin the tractors when tape is not in then it is the motor belt to be changed, it dilatated and now does not have enough friction to move the tapes.

My solution was for case A , for case b ( el chico de Equador con el radiocassette que se apaga en quanto ponga play):
The problem is similar, check all the above with empty cassette, also press play and try to force for a little bit the tractor to run, the, the tractor may be stuck.
Additionally check that the rubber traction weel that drives the tape (esta cosa de goma negra que lleva la cinta) is not stuck when you press play, if the weel is stuck that is the cause for the problem.
(es quasi seguramente la rueda de traccion, la de goma que lleva la cinta en la parte de abajo , Ponga play sin la cinta si la rueda no corre , entonces es la rueda)

Hmmm...sounds like the transport motor/foot are stuck..open it up, and inspect around those items(where the tape actually clamps down) and see if you can see anything in there. Might even be a bug, no fooling..

as to repairs..you are most likely talking some major money, and a long time in the repair depot, which I believe is in Rio..I'll check that for you while you do this part.

SOURCE: Denon DRM 740 tape does not play

Just bought a unit from a thrift store. Found same problem; FF & RW OK, but play engages then stops. Also noticed buzzing noise when power turned on. Opened unit, found broken capstan drive belt. FF & RW driven from different motor. Buzz was drive motor running freely with no load - when power is on, capstan is driven all the time for fast play/record start. Replaced with rubber band, and it works --- now looking for replacement belt.

Denon tape deck ddr m30 will not play cassette, but fast forwards and rewinds fine, it just wont play!

There may be a separate motor for the play function and either it or a drive belt has failed.

How to adjust speed denon cassette deck ?

There will be either on the motor or on the circuit board where the motor power comes from a preset. images below of what they might look on the board. One of these might be found in the motor, but hidden from view. All you might see is a slot in the bottom of the motor. This could be covered with a sticky label to prevent access.

Deck is running too slow

The unit either needs a new belt, Capstan bearing oiling as in taking the flywheel out and if this does not fix it a new capstan motor. The motor is adjustable with a small screw driver provided you have the appropriate wow and flutter meter and test tape to do the job.

Denon DRM-740 stops

This may mean the takeup reel is intermittent or that he cam system of the transport is not getting the correct feedback. I have hd some decks that had very little back tension and they would skew tape- and the audio would be gone before they would shut off. The deck need restorative work done to it and now is the time before is eats all your tapes up.

The pressure roller on my reel all of a sudden stopped and now when I press play it won't grab the tape and start but if I wait at some point it will start but then it releases the pressure roller back...

Sounds like a mechanical fault, you need to look around to see if anything has broken or fell off. Some decks use a solenoid to move rollers up and down, that could have a fault on it.
