I ran the full self-clean cycle (4:20) and I now have opened the door but cannot close it. The lock latch remains exposed in a position to not allow the oven door to close. How can I fix this so I can use the oven.

Try to run the self clean again for just a few mins. and see what happens.

If door latched:

1. Disconnect power from unit.
   
2. Check wires and connectors from control to door switch, then from door
   switch to control. If no damage to wires and all connectors okay, proceed to
   step C.
   
3. Replace door switch.
   
4. Re-apply power.
   
5. Press and hold any key down for 1 minute to clear F5 failure code from
   memory. F2 will appear. Press CANCEL and observe for 1 minute to ensure
   operation is correct.

2. If door not latched:

1. Disconnect power from unit.
   
2. Check wires and connectors from control to latch switch, then from latch
   switch to control. If no damage to wires and all connectors okay, proceed to
   step C.
   
3. Repeat steps A and B for door switch.

3. Measure door switch (door open = switch open small low voltage terminals).
Replace switch if defective.
4. Measure latch switch (unlatch = switch open,
CAUTION - oven light contacts are closed). Replace switch if defective.
5. If
corrections are made in any step, reconnect power to control. Press and hold any
key for 1 minute to clear R failure code from memory. F2 will appear. Press
CANCEL and observe for 1 minute to ensure operation is correct.
6. If failure
remains, disconnect power and replace control.

Note:
Applies to all F5-E... codes.

Ok. Open the door and find the oven light switch(es) (some models had two switches). Press the switch(es) in and see if the latch goes back to the home position. If not enlist a volunteer to turn on the self clean cycle while you are holding the switch(es) in. Just after the self clean starts have them hit cancel and wait until the lock comes back to it's "home" or unlocked position.

Wipe it up with a damp cloth after the oven cools. If white spots remain, remove them with a soap- filled scouring pad and rinse thoroughly with a vinegar and water mixture. These deposits are usually a salt residue that cannot be removed by the clean cycle. If the oven is not clean after one clean cycle, repeat the cycle.
You cannot set the oven for cooking until the oven is cool enough for the door to unlock.
While the oven is self-cleaning, you can touch the TIMER/CLOCK pad to display the time of day.
To return to the clean countdown, touch the COOKING TIME pad.
If the shelves become hard to slide, apply a small amount of vegetable oil or cooking oil to a paper towel and wipe the edges of the oven shelves with the paper towel.

How to self clean
If your model has a door latch, never force the latch handle. Forcing the handle will damage the door lock mechanism.
The oven door must be closed and all controls set correctly for the cycle to work properly.
Before a Clean Cycle
For the first self-clean cycle, we recommend
venting your kitchen with an open window
or using a ventilation fan or hood.
Remove any broiler pan, broiler grid, all
cookware, probe and any aluminum foil
from the oven—they cannot withstand the
high cleaning temperatures.
NOTE:
If your oven is equipped with nickel oven
shelves, remove them before you begin
the self-clean cycle.
If your oven is equipped with gray
porcelain-coated oven shelves, they may
be left in the oven during the self-clean
cycle.
Soil on the front frame of the range and
outside the gasket on the door will need to
be cleaned by hand. Clean these areas with
hot water, soap-filled scouring pads or
cleansers such as Soft Scrub®. Rinse well
with clean water and dry.
Do not clean the gasket. The fiberglass
material of the oven door gasket cannot
withstand abrasion. It is essential for the
gasket to remain intact. If you notice it
becoming worn or frayed, replace it.
Wipe up any heavy spillovers on the oven
bottom.
Make sure the oven light bulb cover is in
place and the oven light is off.
IMPORTANT: The health of some birds
is extremely sensitive to the fumes given
off during the self-cleaning cycle of any
range. Move birds to another well ventilated
room.
NOTE: Use caution when opening the upper
oven after the self-clean cycle has ended.
The oven may still be hot.

How to Set the Upper Oven for Cleaning
On models with Gas/Control Lockout,
touch and hold the Gas/Control Lockout
pad for 3 seconds to turn it off.
NOTE: The surface burners must be turned
off prior to the self-clean start time.

Using the number pads, enter the

4 hours is needed.

If the lock does not open after the oven has cooled down, you can try....1) Unplugging the range or shut off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes. Plug the range back in or turn on the circuit breaker. Set the clock and try moving the door lock lever or opening the door. 2) Set the self-clean cycle again and only allow it to work for 15 minutes. Cancel the self-clean cycle and allow the oven to cool. Gently try moving the door lock lever or opening the door.

Most ranges today use 3 different types of door locks...one is a solenoid controlled lock ( you hear a loud buzz noise when setting or unlocking the lock and has a arm that you must move to set the lock )...another is a heat sensitive lock ( has a arm that you must move to lock and un-lock, makes no noises and has a spring that slowly moves to lock the door will the oven is heating up )...Some locks are motorized ( no handle to move, the motor locks the door by it's self when you set the range for self clean )... If the motorized and heat sensitive locks fails to open after the self clean cycle, you must access the lock and move it yourself to open the door. On the free standing ranges, most times you must lift the cook top to access the lock mechanism. On built in ovens, the oven must be pulled out to remove the top access panel to get at the lock mechanism. Some build in ovens can have the control console removed to access the lock system. On the heat sensitive style of lock, there are no electrical parts to operate the lock, usually you will need to replace the lock. On the motorized style of lock, you will have to use a ohm/volt meter to test why the motor will not work. On the solenoid style of lock, the solenoid is often mounted on the back of the range and can be accessed by removing the rear panel, some may be mounted at the front, such as in a built in oven. The failure of the solenoid style of lock is normally caused by a bad lock solenoid. In order to get your door open, you must operate the door latch mechanism manually. *On -some- Frigidaire built ranges, the switch is located behind the right hand side panel and activated by the right hand door hinge. On this model, the side panel may need to be removed to access a malfunctioning door switch.

Turns out that the latch is attached to a plastic piece (made by the manufacturer) and the spring melted! To boot, the fuse in the back which aids in heating the oven went out also. Repair man said this was typical after several uses in cleaning cycle. He recommended using a gentle steel wool pad with soap built in to gently remove backed on food instead of using cleaning cycle. It is just too hot for too long, and there seems to be a domino effect with things that will go wrong. Nothing like the old fashioned way and a little elbow grease!

WHEN THE DOOR IS LOCKED ON A SELF-CLEANING RANGE, AND THE TEMP GETS ABOVE 400 DEGREES, IT LOCKS THE LATCHING ASSEMBLY SO YOU CAN'T OPEN THE DOOR AND GET SCORCHED. IF YOU FORCED THE HANDLE TO TRY TO OPEN IT, YOU BENT THE ARM OF THE LATCHING ASSEMBLY. IN ORDER TO RELEASE THE LATCH,
ONLY IF YOU FORCED IT TO THE OPEN POSITION, YOU MUST FORCE IT BACK TO THE LOCK POSITION TO STRAIGHTEN THE ARM.THEN IT MIGHT RELEASE.

IF YOUR RANGE HAS A LOCK BUTTON THAT NEEDS TO BE
PRESSED TO SLIDE THE LATCH TO THE LOCK POSITION,
YOU WILL HAVE TO SET ALL CONTROLS BACK INTO THE CLEAN POSITION AND PRESS THE LOCK BUTTON TO RELEASE THE LOCK ON THE LATCH ASSEMBLY. YOU SHOULD HEAR A BUZZING OR HUMMING SOUND WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED.

I had the same problem on my Kenmore Electric Range. Door would not unlock. Tried pressing "Off" for multiple seconds, but still would not unlock. No error codes. Clock was displaying normally. Finally decided to try running it thru the self cleaning operation to get it to cycle thru locking and unlocking the door. When I started self clean, the door automatically went thru the auto lock and "locked" appeared in the display. I then hit "Off" to clear it and stop the cleaning cycle. The door then unlocked as normal!
