Ok...do I need to replace it? How do I get started replacing it? It is now completely quiet since I unplugged and plugged in. Fridge side is at 30 and the freezer is at 10. What is the life of these things...is it worth fixing or replacing.

  • brcriss Mar 16, 2008

Is this something that I can do...fairly mechanical...does it require special tools.

  • brcriss Mar 23, 2008

Just wondering...are you ever going to reply to the 3/16 post?

Cool..a growling fridge..neat..what causes that is the motor starting to seize up, from long use and possible overheating.

well..depending on where it is located, how much heat in back, a variety of things...the compressor motor is like a clutch on a car..when it start to make noises, it's a good time to consider getting it fixed.

    compressors..around 200 bucks..labor 2.5 hours..another 150 or so..

you can sell this one to a college kid, and get a nice energy efficient one(maybe even a rebate from local utility, too)...for just a bit more than that, eh?

    thankya for using fixya

well...a new motor...standard wrenches, and perhaps an assistant to help with the removal of that item. What's your technical skill level?

Noisy

The noise is coming from flow of refrigerant inside the sealed system, some brands you don't hear it or some brands are really loud. some Manufacture tried install sound detonator (putty like matetial) at the Evaporator inlet, it seems help a little bit, but I have no luck with it.

Bottom freezer making growling sound - stops when door is opened

Good day,
the reason it quites is the fan switch shuts off power to the evaporator fan motor, when the door is opened.
You access that motor , by removing the back rear panel in the freezer compartment.
Changing the motor is a nuts and bolts procedure.

Thank you for using FixYa

My refrigerator growls. It sounds as if there is a bear in there

It could be a fan motor growling, isolate the sound from freezer or refrig or the back. or during some refrigeration cycles the freon surging can also sound like water gushing or growling usually at start up though. The fans can be vibrating, hitting or going fast to slow dc motors.

Motor is "growling" refrigerator/freezer aren't cooling

if youre getting a funny noise, it might be the consenser and not the motor, or it could be the motor, either way a weird sound is a good sign of failure, or soon to fail. Have it checked by an experienced tech.
