I'm a bit of an expert on storage systems. (for sure externals)
it's a SATA HDD in a box with USB cable right?
mad dog,
did you :
1: use
the power pack for it> (it came with it)
use that !!!
do not tell me it works on other PC lacking that pack
we KNOW THAT aND WAY, (POWER ISSUES)
The usb ports can not run that hdd startup currents on vast numbers of Laptops with gutless 100ma usb ports. a fact.
2: next try all USB ports, test the ports with mouse to see that The USB port is even good, at all? next.
it must show up in disk manager first not explorer, its windows and that is a fact. (SEEN IN COMPUTER MANAGEMENT OF CP)
3: are you web connected?, when plugging in the USB cable.
if not , do not expect drivers of any kind to work .
steps:
a: PC on.
b:
power pack connected to mad dog, put ear to MD case hear the drive spin,
if not the power pack is bad, or the drive is dead.
c: plug on the USB cable last, hear windows(be web connected) go
DINGGONGSOUOND? it not the port is dead, try all USB ports
try looking in DM to see if USB ports are dead, some older laptops have USB3 ports that windows has missing drivers, and must be hand loaded by you to make uSB3 work(ask me how)
so try all USB ports. try a mouse on them all , all USB ports must work with a simple mouse. if not use only those ports that work with the mad dog.

dingdongsound = ms windows-system-sounds, called DEVICE connect, have volume up, and that enabled and you will get that sound for any USB connects.
try a mouse or usb stick on all USB ports to prove the all work. first.
then play with HDD. external.
