Question about PC Desktops

Corrupt drive Hi Guys, I have an Iomega 80GB Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Silver Drive, which was working fine when disconnected from a machine and was not xfering data when I disconnected it. The machine, running xp home was subsequently restored and reinitialized. I installed updates. When the drive was reconnected to the machine, I recieved a message that the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. I tried it on a laptop running XP pro-same thing. I am hoping that this is a driver issue but am not optimistic. Not much help from the iImega site.

Hi Whisky300,
If you connected the drive after the updates, you may want to manually update and select "Custom" rather than "Express" at the Microsoft update site (with your USB Hard Drive attached), The custom installation will allow you to view and select additional hardware and software updates that the express option won't, and may very well pick up your USB hard drive.
If the above has been tried already or doesn't help, you can give this link a try: https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/iomega_na_en.cfg/php/enduser/cust_alp.php?prod_lvl1=3&prod_lvl2=34&p_prods=3,34&cat_lvl1=50&p_cats=50&p_pv=2.34&p_cv=1.50&p_sid=A52CRS-i
It's an Iomega support and download page for Firewire/USB hard drives.
Good luck.

I recently restored to factory settings on my HP laptop.once restored I then input my Iomega drive into the USB port to access some of my saved files.

Just to be on the safe side, why not plug in your iomega drive into another known working computer and see what happens. If it works fine and is properly recognized then the anomaly lies within the software of your laptop.

U might want to contact HP - but be fore warned that they are terrible for support if your unit is "out of warranty." If that is the case I would simply google the anomaly and in all likelihood you will get links that will help you fix it yourself.

Can you recommend the correct external hd to use for this old pc? Thanks a lot.

Anything up to a 1 TB external drive will work fine. You will only have a speed issue as it's USB 1 and not USB 2 unless you put a new USB port card in the machine.

hi there, i to have an iomega external drive, have you tried to disconnect the cable, i.e.. the usb cord and restarting the computer and pluging in the hard drive itself back into the usb slot.....if yes i am thinking, another thing is, wha operating system are you using, if it is vista and you restarted the computer with it pluged in you must restart it without the iomega plugged into the computer, when an external drive is plugged in and the system resatrts vista recognizes it as an internal drive and tries to reboot from it....i am not sure why vista does this, it happens to me and microsoft says it's a protection thing, from hacker hardware components......so all usb things should be replugged into the computer after vista has started with just the regular things...microphones and such are ok....just things with mass storage are what need to be unplugged and replugged into the computer after reboot....hope this helps....shia

How do i connect an external hard drive to my LG LCD Tv?

The LG's will support an external USB hard drive, but it seems the USB support was intended for thumb drives, so yuo need to do the following to get it working:
  1. the drive must be formatted FAT32 (like thumbdrives)
  2. keep the file names short
  3. keep the directory structure simple and as flat as possible
I have a 60GB laptop drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure drive working really nicely with good transfer rates. It takes it's power from the USB socket and is working fine.

Hope this helps.

My iomega 80gb portable hard drive has stopped being recognised by my mac. Have plugged it into a pc and the following messgae appears: WINDOWS-DRIVE NOT READY The drive is not ready for use it's...

If the drive will spin and the read/write heads are not damaged you can attach an ide to usb adapter to the drive after you take it out of the case and possibly get the data off of the drive. There are companies that you can have do this but they are expensive. Do a search for data recovery and you'll see how many there are.

I have 2 USB key drives, and if I write files to them on one of two computers, then try and read them on the other (or sometimes the same computer) they are sometimes corrupt.

are the computers running lower than windows xp? if they are you need to disconnect the usb drive from the option near your clock before you take it out, on windoxs xp or vista you can just pull out the drive pen without disconnecting it.

I have a iomega mdhd500-ue for about past ten months.when switched on it useually whirls into action but now it is just making a repeated clicking sound and it is not connecting to my laptop

I have a MDHD500-N Iomega external HD that had the same issue - clicking at startup and flashing power LED. I noticed that the supplied power transformer for the unit is 12V 1A and the sticker on the HD enclosure says 12V 2A. I hooked up the HD enclosure directly to a power supply - at boot up, the HD draws 2.5A, more than double what the provided power transformer can output. HD enclosure runs beautifully on an external PS.
