Janome JD1818 Automatic Buttonhole Not Working

I've used my automatic buttonhole feature before, but now it won't work. I've checked my manual and I appear to be doing everything right, but all that happens when I go to start a buttonhole is the initial beginning ziz-zag. It just continues to do this and won't move onto the next step.

I am now trying to just do normal sewing and my feed dogs will not advance my fabric. The feed dogs are in the up position, but just move up and down without advancing the fabric. When I press the reverse button it moves the fabic backwards like normal. Stitch length makes no difference and I just cleaned the feed dogs.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately the problem seems to be caused by the feed dogs, since they are no longer operating properly (mentioned in my second post). Any ideas for fixing/adjusting feed dogs?

similar problem here. it sews the front and left side but just bunches up when it gets to the back. i have been able to get it to function successfully hit or miss but there seems to be no consistency or user error.

If everything appears to be working correctly for the first side and stops and bunches up when it should reverse - Make sure you have pulled down the stopper arm (this is not clear in the manual) when the button hole foot contacts the stopper arm gently push the foot against the stopper arm and the direction will reverse and finish the button hole. **Stopper arm pulls down from above - Check the pictures in you manual carefully.**

I couldn't work out why mine stopped working.... .and it was because I had forgotten that I had switched the feed dogs off ('round the back) when I sewed on a button. Once the feed dogs were back in action, it worked a charm.

If you know that your reverse mechanism is functioning normally for ordinary sewing, and not at fault....

Make absolutely certain the position of the sample button in the holder is correct, and the button hole foot assembly is attached with the stopper in the correct position, as the stopper arm must engage to "tell" the mechanism to stop and change direction.

If you cannot see from the manual quite how this is achieved and you want more help with this, just post back here, or, drop a line through the "Contact Us" page at www.bargainbox.com.au

Is it possible to override the automatic buttonhole setting on a Necchi ex30?

Are you asking if you can do a buttonhole without the special buttonhole feature? If so--of course you can. Sewists do it all the time on machines without the buttonhole feature or special feet. Be sure to practice on some scrap fabric first.

My automatic buttonhole stitch is not working on my elna sewing machine ,even when the lever is pulled down

you should a buttonhole button that must be pushed on the machine
either before you pull the buttonhole lever down or after to let the
sewing machine know what function to use, my sewing machine
won't let me make a buttonhole unless I push the buttonhole button
or yes, like you said the buttonhole foot could be damaged.

My buttonhole is not working I hear a beep when i press down on the foot to go, what am I doing wrong

I get the same beeping when I forget to pull down the buttonhole lever

if you have the automatic buttonhole & the buttonhole foot that you have to put a button in,,check & see if there is a buttonhole lever that has to be pulled down, it will be a lever to the left of the needle bar

Instructions for buttonhole 40. I do not have instructions for making a 40 automatic buttonhole.

Instructions are on page 132 of the manual. Use either foot 5A or No.10 (which is more complicated). Select stitch No.40 then enter the length of the buttonhole you want to make using the number keys. If you want to define where the second bartack goes manually, press key 6 (under "Man") and you will have to press the Reverse key when the second row is where you want to finish the buttonhole. You will not be able to repeat this same size buttonhole automatically if you chose Manual bartack. By pressing OK after setting the length of the buttonhole you will be presented with a screen where you can adjust the width of the buttonhole (wider for heavy fabrics, narrower for finer fabrics) if you want.

I cant get the machine to sew a buttonhole.

I am not familiar with your machine, but some buttonhole attachments require a lever be lowered and inserted into a tab.

Review your manual to see if a step was overlooked.

Can't figure out automatic buttonhole use on MC4000

2 things must do:
You have to use the buttonhole foot.
You have to pull down the lever to the lowest position (just left of needle bar/ presser bar up in machine.)
Set to buttonhole. After each buttonhole, be sure to change off the buttonhole then reset to buttonhole to reset the buttonhole to the beginning
