I had the exact same problem, from reading various different articles it sounded like the problem was lens guide pins being out of position. When the lens was extended when tuned on, I held it open and twisted slightly, a slight click was heard (the pins relocating I think) and the camera returned to normal. I hope this helps.

This is lens mechanism problem and lens assembly will be replaced to fix the issue.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1 Digital Camera wont come on

do you have a manual for that?

if i could only remember correctly, you have to press a button to go into safe mode for that. you are experiencing an internal error that requires a reset that can only be done in your cameras safe mode.

hope this helps.

My camera keeps telling me turn off and on. Can't get beyond that!

Usually when a sony digital camera displays that message it means that the lens will not extend or retract and as such there is a problem with your lens that needs professional service.

Lens won't come out

Replace with new batteries. If that doesnt solve the problem then it may be time for new camera. Cheaper to replace than try to fix.

Sony cyber-shot dsc-n1 screen gone black

If you can, take a good look at your lens. In this case, this is an actual lens of a DSC-N1 in which you can see lines in it. This is not a shutter, it's physically cracked.
This assembly is fairly easy to replace. However, I don't know what Sony would charge for the lens. This is why you can take pictures but everything comes out black. Not sure exactly what this piece does but I do know it has something to do with the transmission of light that goes through the lens.

If this is your case, for sure you will need to replace the lens assembly. Another thing you can try for those of you who do not have a broken lens, is put a flashlight right up against the lens and see if the display shows any light. In any case, this is your problem.
