Question about Sony Hi8 CCD-TRV138 Camcorder
If the screen is "black" while in the record mode, then the CCD is defective and must be replaced. If you will contact Sony, they are aware of this problem and should replace the CCD under warranty @ no charge including shipping.

The heads could be dirty or the tape path could be out of alignment.
