I try to download songs onto my sansa e280, when i plug it into my computer it says "connected" as soon as i try to put a song on or if i delete a song it says "writing". that doesnt go away and when i disconnect, the songs i deleted are deleted but the songs i tried to put on arnt there. what do i do

I would wait for the writing message to go away before disconnecting the player - this is the standard message it will give you when you are transferring songs to the player. If it still says writing after 5 minutes (this is assuming you are not trying to load more than 20 songs at once), then you might have a real problem.
Make sure the files you are trying to load do not have DRM encryption on them, and also make sure they are in mp3 or wma format.
If you have Windows Media Player 11:
Quick Method 1 - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Quick Method 2 - Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. When the Sansa reads "refreshing database," what it is doing is going through all the songs you've loaded on to it, pulling out the "tag" information (Artist, Album, Song Title, Genre) so it can add this information to its own database which it uses to display the songs to you in its menus.
If it gets stuck during this process, usually it's because of a corrupt song file, or a song file in a format it doesn't understand.
Note that the e280 is only able to play MP3 and WMA audio formats. If you've loaded a different type of audio file onto your Sansa, you'll need to remove them.
If the songs you've recently loaded have all been MP3 and/or WMA, you may have loaded a corrupted file onto your Sansa. Try removing the songs you recently added, and see if the problem goes away.
Check and see if the songs you put on the mp3 player are a hidden file Connect to your computer open my computer goto tools on the top of the page folder options click on view Here you will see Hidden files and folder click on do not show hidden files and folders and put a check mark on hide ext....and hide protected Hit apply. Delete any songs you put on the player and start over
Check My Computer. If the PC recognises the Sansa player then simply add the songs by dragging the files into the player's icon on My Computer. Sometimes this kick starts the built in software included on the mp3 player.
"Refresh database" is a normal message that you will get everytime you unplug the Sansa from the computer - don't worry about that aspect.
If the songs that you have transferred have DRM encryption on them, they may not play right (or at all) on the Sansa.
If you have Windows Media Player 11, I would get the firmware update from the Sansa website AND format the Sansa inside Windows Media Player:

The device has 2 modes on it MSC and MTP, if you changed modes and uploaded songs in the other mode, they are only visible on the PC in that mode. But, the PC will show the total amount of free space on the device.
If this is not the issue, I would try formatting your device to remove everything and start over.
You can FORMAT thru My Computer>Device Name (e280)>Right Click and select FORMAT.
