Problem is with the main handset for AT&T 5.8 GHz Cordless Telephone Model 5870 with Talking Caller ID/Call Waiting - about 5 years old. The handset is quite warm to the touch and there is a blue glow around the ear piece which I have never observed before. Otherwise the handset is dead with nothing whatsoever displayed in the viewing window and no dial tone or ability to answer - dead. I replaced the battery according to instructions and waited 24 hours with no change - still dead. Is this handset kaput? Do I just need another one now? WHat would cause this?
I bought a new answering system rather than futz with the handset on my four-year-old one. For $80 I got an AT&T 5.8 GHz system with 3 additional handsets, batteries included, ready to go. Better ones can be had (DECT 6.0 Digital) for about $120. Contrast that with the one I bought four years ago, which had one handset, now broken, and cost $179,99 at the time. Made no sense to fool around trying to get the old handset to work.
I regret having spent $15 replacing the battery on the old one first cuz I thought that might have been the problem (though I knew in my gut it wasn't) - lesson learned there. Anywho, solved.
