Toshiba RD 34 XS Dvd drive replacement required?.

  • gmk1393 May 01, 2008

I have a Toshiba RD-XS54SU, not exactly the same DVR, but it has just started to do that too. Every disc I put in, blank, one I made, purchased movie disc, even the lens cleaning disc will not play and the machine says the disc is bad. And now, maybe, I can't get the cable signal through the machine...unless there's something I've forgotten when I reconnected it. The solution, by the way, before the signal problem, turning it off, etc...tried it several times to no avail.

But this machine was never right, and I had bad feelings about a DVR with a fan that ran 24/7 even when switched off.

Soon after getting it the machine set new limits. I could only record in LP for about 3 hours, not 4. It would get a couple minutes beyond 3 hours and screw up. In SP same thing, 1 hour 30 minutes instead of 2 hours. I lived with the limit for quite a while. But aggravating beyond this was that it would frequently fail to burn a disc, blame it on the disc, if, say, I was making more than a couple disc. Usually I'd burn a disc or two, leave it alone for a while, then burn another one or two and usually then it wouldn't fail. I'm thinking an all too easy overheating problem.

But now here I am. Can't make a disc, lots of programs in the HD to rescue, and now it apparently can't bring in the cable signal as well. (An annoying side issue. Tried to copy the programs to a JVC DR-MV7S (no straight to disc, but there's a feature in that machine that will only allow you to record something once and it's reading these programs as once-recorded, apparently, and refuses to record them to disc, so I'll have to either get the Toshiba working or find another way to rescue the programs in it.

I'm not very happy with Toshiba right now.

My unit will not play DVD's of any compatible media type provioulsy recorded with this unit , commercial DVDs or reconize blank media. It says the disk may be damaged or need cleaning. I supect it may be the DVD drive itself but I cannot find an exact replacement drive.

My RD-XS34 will not play DVDs of any of the compatible formats that were previously record in this machine or commercial DVDs and will not recognize blank media. It says that the disk may be damaged or need cleaning. I suspect it is the DVD drive itself but an exact replacement doesn’t seem to be available anymore.

I have opened up the unit, disassembled the drive and cleaned the laser lens. This did not remedy the problem.

Hi ****,

I've one of these machines too, and you've stumbled upon the one flaw that lets the machine down. In my experience the only way to solve this is to:
1/ Eject the DVD
2/ Turn the machine off (standby mode)
3/ Unplug from the wall for at least a minute or 2
4/ Reconnect the machine, leave it at least a minute in standby mode.
5/ Attempt to play a known 'good' (commercial) DVD

This usually works although I have occasionally had to repeat the process. Hope this helps, regards,

I need a way to play dvd's from China. My wife brought her english training dvd's from china but we can not use them on a region 1 dvd. My dvd drive is a matshita DVD +- RW UJ890

Hi, you are partly correct, your region 1 player is also in NTSC format, other regions are in PAL format...... So even if you converted your player to multi region or bought a multi region player it still would not play a PAL disk which the Chinese disks would be! The only way you could do this is to buy a multi region PAL/NTSC format DVD player.

My RD-XS32 will not read dvd's when i put them in the dvd player. It gives me the message that it cant read the disk, to check it for cleaning or damage.

I have the same problem. Initially it was intermitent, but then it started to get progressivly worst to the point that the dvr no longer recognizes blank disks for recording.

I wonder if someone had experience replacing the dvd burner with another, would it be compatible enough for the dvr to continue working properly (I know it is an older sony dvd burner. Worst case I dump $40 and then put the new burner on my PC instead)

Only says loading when started, does nothing

Hi, your problem is the laser lens, it went sour. This device is coded to read only region 1 disks, when U attempt to read other regions disks it will read them once, 2 or 3 times but then... it will stop reading any disk regardless the region they are. Regions codes were implanted on disks to control piracy, so USA has region 1, Mexico 4, Asia I believe is 3 and so on. There are a total of 6 regions worldwide, U have to get disks matching the region U are from or, better solution... get a multi-region DVD player.

Mizuda dvd player wont read dvds

A couple of things To try.

1:) The DVD Player May be Region encoded, can only play certain region Dvds. ** Try different Disks**

2:) The Disk May Be Dirty-Scratched ( Towards The Centre )
** Clean The Disk With A Soft Lint-Free Cloth**

3:) The Laser Head may have a speck of dust or debris on it.
** Try a Laser Cleaning CD**

Hope this works For You.

Toshiba RD-XS35 DVD Recorder

Toshiba tech support for this one. If it is not accepting the cleaner disk - you have to wonder if something is already intere or do you mean will not rune the disk? Inwhich case it is a drive failure and needs replacement[of drive if available] or whole machine. Contact Toshiba first though it may be a known issue.
