Firstly, recover your data on the external hard drive with third party data recovery software. Then you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
For data recovery program,I have a professional one on my computer that can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drive crash, system sabotage, virus attack etc.You can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your data can be recovered. http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm

How to use your IPOD as an External Drive (Mac)

If you're running out of external Hard drives or don't have a Flash drive on hand, and you need to transfer file or simply trying to copy anything externally, don't worry! Ipod can be a useful tools beside from its original purpose, as being a wonderful portable media device, this digital wonder can practically be used a portable external drive, on which you can store files, JUST like an external HDD (Hard Disk Drive) connected to your Mac.

An example of Ipod classic packs a lot of data storage in just a small package, from 5GB up to 160 GB, and in the future, some Ipod will have more capacity (A Gigabytes is a unit of computer memory of data storage capacity, that is equal to 1,024 megabyte, so One Gigabytes is equal to one billion bytes).
To configure an Ipod to be used an an external Hard Drive please follow this steps:
  1. Of course connect your Ipod to your Mac ( Once this is connected iTunes will automatically launch and connects to the Ipod
  2. Select the Ipod on the source list
  3. Click the summary tab, if its isn't selected already
  4. Select the Enable disk use disk box, (at this time you will see a warning prompt that will explain this procedure, because the Ipod will be acting as Hard Drive (Hard Drive is an optical or magnetic disk that is used to read and write information on it)
  5. Click Ok at the prompt
  6. Click Apply, then it is ready to use.
  7. Note: You must manually eject this before disconnecting the device from your computer after you finished!

I have a Toshiba Portege A100. When I try to start up my laptop it goes to the Toshiba screen, and then goes to a black screen with a cursor blinking in top left-hand corner, and hangs. I have tried to get...

Hi,
The blinking cursor indicates that the Operating System is not loading properly, probably due to missing or corrupt file and you have to reinstall the system to fix it.
To get the data back, you have to remove the hard disk and connect it to another PC and back up the required/ vital data, after which you can put the hard disk back in the laptop and re-install it.
There are several cut-out panels at the bottom of your notebook. Remove the screws holding them in and pop them off. You may need to use a flathead screwdriver to pry the panels off. Remove the panel at the bottom left to unveil the hard disk. (Remove the screws holding the hard disk, if any) Pull the hard disk towards left corner (as shown) to unlock it from its connector to remove. Once you remove the hard disk, you would have to connect it to another PC as Portable hard disk. Its a SATA hard disk, so you need a SATA to USB interface (portable disk case). Copy the vital data to another PC and put the disk back and reinstall the Operating System afresh.

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

My desktop model is Compaq SR5213 with 250G harddisk. Recently, I would add a new internal hard disk (3.5", 1 TB), is it possible? As I don't want to buy a external hard disk. thanks

You can add 1 TB hard as additional to 250 GB Hard disk. You did not need to buy a external hard disk. Both hard disks will work together and make total hard disk space- 1.25 TB.

I lost my operating system for an acer aspire one netbook i downloaded an 05 gateway recovory disk.it can do hardly anything. can i download a recovry disk or burn a disk free?

Hello,

Not that I am aware of. You can puchase a new recovery disk from Acer for an average of 25 bucks depending on model. The only other way to get it "free" is to find a friend or someone with the same model and burn a copy of thiers.

Good Luck
