this has happen to me!! and i end up buying another ps3 and it end up the same!!! i fix both of them!!! and about over 200 consols with the same problem!!! this is what u do! you connect your control direct to your ps3. and then you hold the power button for 5 seconds!! the system will turn on!!!remove your finger for a second and hold the power button till you hear 2beeps then remove your finger and the system will shut off!! this is a manuel reset!!! the system will turn back on!! asking u to connect your controller!! you already have it connected. then it will give you about 6 options!! you will choose RESTORE FILES!!! your system will check for your system defaults!! then it will tell you that you have corrupted files!! and proceed with it!!! it will fix if you have problems with your controls,if it doesnt play games, blue ray,if it freeze, system shutting off, icon problems, only playing sertting games or movies!!! if you have problems or any question feel free to ask!! i know is fustrating!!!
My friend has just had the same problem with the latest update version 2.3. There is a problem with this firmware, where the Blu Ray chip is allowed to run faster than it can cope with and basically cooks. Phone Sony if your PS3 fails to recognise any disc or flat-packs after this update. They are sending new consoles out to those who have this issue, on an exchange basis. Even 60GB are being replaced. Some of us have been lucky and not had a problem (yet). This is a firmware update problem, not a console glitch. If in doubt, phone Sony!

How do u find out what firmware you have on your ps3?

My PS3 recently stopped playing all games and DVD,s.I had previosly experienced the same problem when under warranty so sent it back to sony for repair. When the problem reoccurred i assumed that it was a problem with the laser. As it was no longer under warranty and not wanting to give sony any more of my hard earned cash, i decided to repair it myself by replacing the laser.
Unfortunatly having replaced the laser, the problem remained, the drive refused to read the disk.
Having read thru the posts with similar issues, i realised that i may have a software problem rather than a hardware problem.
What worked in my case was to do a quick format of the PS3 hard drive, using the system menu. This will restore the software to its original state without all the software updates and takes only a few minutes and your game saves can be easily backed up to SD card.
My PS3 now works fine. I dont anticipate that this solution will work for everyone with the same problem but its worth considering especially if your looking at a cash outlay to sony or 3rd party repairers.
THIS IS WHAT YOU DO....
I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure I am not the only one who is beside themselves with frustration because of this problem that SONY refuses to acknowledge fault for and wants to charge us a minimum of $150 bucks to fix..
- THIS IS UNETHICAL, UNFAIR AND JUST PLAIN WRONG!!
I appreciate any advice, input and/or support you might offer me/us in this matter.. If you feel the same way, please contact me at babygirlkellyd@gobolts.com to discuss this possibility..
Thanks,

I have the same problem. My PS3 stopped reading any bluray discs. The spinning circle in the top right corner will come on for a few seconds when a disc is inserted, but then nothing. I found a work-around to get it to read discs though. You have to have a bluray disc in the drive (game or movie) and start a downloaded game or Playstation Home. Once the game or Home loads, hit the PS button on the controller. The crossbar menu will pull up and you will notice the disc icon will (magically) pop up. Click the quit game icon. Once you are out of the downloaded game or Home the disc icon will still be there. You can then load the game or disc. The icon will remain there until you eject the disc, so you will have to repeat this every time you want to load a game. Although this is a workaround to prevent Sony from gouging you for $150+, this is still not a fix. A fix would be for Sony to admit they have a money making firmware problem and fix it. This fix will only work if you don't have an actual hardware failure (which I apparently don't). I think a class action lawsuit is in order for everyone that has this problem and especially for those who have shelled out the money to fix something that is firmware related. I'm sure Sony will only fix the firmware to make this workaround not work anymore so as not to lose their little cash flow scheme.
I read ths form KcViper and it is the solution without paying money out of your pocket, you can actually call sony give them the problem and when they tell you the system is bad tell them that you have a solution and that is their firmware that is messed up, here is the post from KcViper and thank you my man.

the only way to solve this problem is to go after sony where it hurts, their pockets. Call customer support and take up as much of Sony's time as you can, be inventive and have fun with it but be nice.the operators are being paid. Try to eat up as much time as you can at least until you feel that they have not profited from your purchase.Get some friends have a few drinks put it on speaker.Sony should have had a recall. Call any and all Sony numbers you can find related or not shut down their useless customer service force everyone who deals with sony to say something .Please pass on this message. Let sony know what happens to companies who make crappy products and rip people off.PMF
The Blu Ray Diode fried when you shut the power switch on in the back. The PS3 uses 2 different lasers to read disks. One for standard dvd's and cd's and one for Blu Ray. The only way to fix your PS3 is to replace the Blue Ray Diode or laser lens. I would recommend paying the $150 bucks to have sony replace unless you know something about Diodes and lasers.

If you hold down the eject button for 10 seconds it will reset your laser and then you should be able to shut the power down in back safetly.

I was playing GTA 4 when the same thing happened to me. And in a fit of rage I turned the power switch off in back which fried my diode. I sent it back to sony to get it fixed.

Ok guys, Well i have some bad new. I have tried everything given to me by you guys and nothing has worked. I finally broke down and called Sony one last time. After talking with the tech i have decided to send my Playstation in for repair. I do believe that this is my only option. I have paid with tax $168 to have them ship me a box so i can send it in for repair. The guy i spoke with said it might have been a broken blu-ray drive. I hate the fact that it was out of warranty but, at this point it the $168 is better than a broken $600 paperweight. Thanks for all your help guys, If i can give anybody any suggestion. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PS3 WHILE YOU HAVE A GAME IN THE DRIVE! At least Eject it before switching the back switch.
Ok so here is a recap of the things i have tried.
1: Inserting and Ejecting the disc multiple times
2: Restoring Default Settings
3: Holding Eject button for 10 sec. to reset laser.
4: Downloaded current update
5: Tried finding Ver 2.17 but couldn't
6: Delete newly loaded data IE GTA4 hard disk install.
7: Through PS3 on ground to jog the laser loose.... JK trying to see who was paying attention.
Well everyone I hope your PS3 is under warranty if this happens to you.

Good luck you guys!

Read my post from the May 27th, Try all that stuff. If that still doesnt allow it to read blu-ray call Sony and send it in. If its under warranty then you wont have to pay anything. If its over a year old it will cost about $169 total. I just got my box on Friday. I will be sending it back out on Monday i will try to keep you guys posted on the wait time.

Ok guys i told you i would keep you guys updated with my system. I shipped it over night on Monday. With much suprise i recieved my system in the mail today. I would have to say that was the best turn around ever. I was expecting 7-10 days and they did it in 3. Thanks Sony!!!!

So You buy a PS3 at Sams Club or Walmart and switch the unit with the one in the box...make sure you swap the serial numbers and close it up to new looking condition. I figure you not doing anythin wrong since they built a $400 system that is faulty!!!!!
I hate sony, i will never pay them to fix nor will iever buy a product from them. im surprised st the japanese this is out of character for them. must be an american company benefeting from this
I look all over the net but could't find anything, until i found a site that said they
could show me how to fix any problem with my ps3. At first i was not so
sure about ordering the manual but i did, whats $5 plus i used paypal, but
long story short i fix my ps3, i recomend this site www.gameme.20fr.com
i hope this help you like it help me.
ok the way to fix your ps3 not reading discs is to clik on a demo the quit out and your game should pop up.if that dosent work your going to have to loose your data go to restore ps3 then when its at 1 percent cancel and the the ps3 will restart and it will ask if u want to format and loose your data click yes and your cd problem will be solved for more answeres or question just ask
I had a problem with my sons ps3 not reading games. I looked all over Google and I found this place in Rockford Illinois that said they could fix it. Their website is Rockfordpc.com. I sent it to them and they fixed it and sent it back to me for $120. Evidently the laser went bad. All their ps3 repairs are $99 except for the lasers. I would give them a try, I liked them.
its the blu ray laser ,if you have a warrenty you can send it in for sony to fix or like me mine expiried so im going to replace it myself you can buy the piece you need on ebay and youtube has alot of how 2 videos
the only thing that sony recomend to do when your ps3 froze is to restart the system, hold the turn off button on your ps3 not he controller for 10 seconds.but i've never try this to seeo f this really work because i have no problems with my ps3.
p.s. the solution i read on http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PS3 ijust forgot on which section i read it.
Don't have a solution, but a class action lawsuit is the right idea, for any company that is getting over on the consumer. Everybody, should take their claims to the better business bureau, or jusk tell Jan on fox news to get the word out on Sony's money getting scam.
Had exact same problem ,solved five minutes ago thanks to pcscm1 solution number 11.
Had visions of forking out hundreds of euro to sony ,broke into cold sweat.
Thought i'd check this site before ringing sony.
pcscm1 was right,it was a software problem,not a hardware.
In my case i just backed up game saves ,did a quick format and my ps3 was repaired!!!
Buy a new blu-ray disc reader and install it yourself thats what i had to do to get mines to work again
You can fix this all you need to do is readjust the laser and to do this you need a good guide that will show you how.
Or of course you can send it in for repair.
A big THANK YOU to Rmchingon for the tip on how to fix the the PS3 not reading any disks. I had the same problem and followed the advise, all working now and my 60GB PS3 has started reading PS2 games again, which hasn't worked for ages. Basically this is what I did.
Connected up a controller via usb lead
Put PS3 into standby (red light) then kept my finger on the power button
Everytime it switched off i hit to power button again and kept my finger on it until I sore the restore menu.
Pressed ok to the corrupt data warning
Selected Restore system files
Pressed ok again
Switched power on again and all was well, it had retained all saved games and settings.

Hey I fixed my problem I have a 20GB ps3 updated hard drive and I think I caused the disk read problem but I don't know I was out of warranty and the 150$ deal to fix was not my cup of tea since I bought this and max price back in the day....Anyway its your disk reading lens it is either dirty or shot so you need to take apart your PS3 and get to the lens try cleaning it SOFTLY like with a q-tip with lens cleaner (put it on q tip not the lens) and just plug the disk drive in and see if it works if not get a new one they are on Ebay for like 50-70 bucks I got mine for 55 (make sure it has a warranty) test it out and that should fix it and oh if you left a disk in there like I did -.- you need to move the arms back in the disk drive but there are great videos on youtube so look them up there it takes like 15mins to do it GOOD LUCK!
the only way to fix your ps3 is too send it back to sony and have them put a new blue ray laser in it..mine broke after only about 10 uses..i had it for about a year and a half..they wanted $150 to repair it cause it wasnt under warranty..i told them it was their bad they said we dont care..i forged the reciept and made it look as thou it was brand new..death to the ps3..sony knows they have a bad problem on their hands cause i know the v.p of sony but because theve sold so many units they will not recall the units..good luck with customer service they will just hang up on you..best to but a xbox and say f-u to sony..which is sad cause everything i own is sony and i will never purchase another sony product again..there $150 mistake cost them 20 grand in future purchases.. "the dizzle..."
If you have an HDMI hookup and let the PS3 automatically choose your HDMI settings, that can cause a variety of problems playing discs. Try your PS3 with a component video connection instead -- or try this solution to get HDMI working right:
1. Reset video settings as per Sony's directions: http:/bit.ly/7FxoTE
2. When prompted, choose to have HDMI set up as your output -- but answer "NO" to the question that asks something like, "Do you want the system to automatically choose the optimal video output settings".
That solved the problem for us. How we got there:
Our new PS3 recognized games and discs but wouldn't play them - games just did nothing, a dvd gave us the message it was PAL (when it was NTSC). At first we thought we had a PS3 with a bad drive but when we had the same problem with our replacement unit we realized it had to be our setup.
We disconnected HDMI and setup with component video, following Sony's instructions on how to reset video settings (http://bit.ly/7FoTE) and it worked! So then we knew it was the HDMI settings. We reconnected HDMI following the instructions on how to reset video settings. Then on setup we chose NOT to automatically set optimal output settings. Problem solved.
We had the same problem with the update to 2.30... it froze on the "Press the PS button on your wireless controller" screen. We tried all of our controllers... nothing. Tried turning it on and off... nothing.
Then we tried plugging in the wireless controller. That worked. It looks like maybe it's disabling the bluetooth during the install. So before you send it in to be repaired, try plugging in the controller first.
Have any of u guys had a problem where the ps3 will not even take the disc in? whenever it does takes a game or dvd it loads right away. but I have to turn my system on and off like ten times n keep reseting the laser for the peice of **** to pull the disc in? sonys goin to ****. The last ps3 i had somehow started my tv unfire? had a repairman look at it said wires sent sparks or something? guess what the tv was sony to. what a surprise huh.? any help with the ps3 taking the disc would be appreciated.
Check the 24 Hz setting in the BD/Blu-ray setting area. Some televisions do not support this option. Turn it off. It will prevent blu-ray movies from playing.
when i try to play call of duty world at war in the corner it sayes call of duty world at war loading then after its done the screen goes black and i hear bep
To all,
The only way you can solve this problem is to get Sony to replace your PS3 console for you.
Lucky for me I was under garentee as I had only had it for a matter of weeks, what a pain in the neck it was and hastle sorting out there mess you think Sony would have more sence, than to release updates without testing them first...
If you are not undergarentee then you will have to pay, which I am sure someone has mentioned, but I agree Sony should cover the cost for there mistake. I'am sure if you argue the point they will show them the comments on this page and how many there are...
Hope this helps, and hopefully happy gaming.

disc reading error =
http://www.petitiononline.com/PS3issue/petition.html
your blueray system is messed up that's why you can't play the movies and all ps3 games are blueray so that falls under the same category
I have had the same issue. Upgraded the firmware to 2.3. I have played COD4, Assasins Creed before but it happened whilst playing Colin McRae DIRT. The game froze. I tried to power down...no luck so switched off from the back. After this, DVDs and PS3 games no longer read. Was asked by sony Customer support to send them the console free of charge to be refurbished/exchanged. Told it would take 15-20 working days. So I will send in soon.
i just resolved mine but formating the whole ps3 system and signing in back wit ur email and password. and u wont loose anything on ur system.
Turning the system upside down worked for me... temporarily that is. It wont load anything now, but it bought me a couple months. Playstation 1's and 2's had disc read errors that doing this solved, so I figured I'd try it with the 3, and it did make the disc load, but now its not wanting to work at all. Like i said... doing this might buy you a couple months...
sounds crazy but i sytem restored held buttons down, surfed the web to trouble shoot and laughed at one person who suggested hitting the top of the ps3 to shuffle the player and guess what it worked .... i spent 4-8 hours trying to fix and all it took was a couple light taps to the top(like you would a babys bottom just slighly harder and presto.....
I had the same problem, try this before sending it to sony it worked for me go to settings at the start and format it this will wipe everythink but did work for me well worth doing. (this happend to me after doing an update for fifa10.)

my playstation wont read games and when it do it feeze,z this is my 2nd ps3 what the **** is up with it like! yet it will play dvds grand
Is there anyone doing a class action suit? I think all of us should get together and do something I just had to shell out $600 to replace my 50 inch tv that they sold me that was faulty go figure I get a ps3 and first game first try it doesnt work will not read a game or blue ray moviie comes up with an erroe 80010514? but it will sometimes load tothe start of the game and then freeze wtf??????????
Y CANT PPL PLAY PS3
I'm in the same boat here... my 80g decided it wasn't going to recognize discs anymore. By the way, it is not just a direct result of that 2.30 firmware update, because mine is still 2.17.
I received mine as a christmas present a couple of months ago from my grandfather who has since passed away. No receipt, so not only do I have to pay $150, but I will no longer have the factory warranty!
All because of their defective hardware! This is robbery. I should not have these problems with a brand new $500 video game system...

I had the same problem. I tried formatting and restting everything I then tried holding on the power button, no pressing and releasing ect just hold it on the PS3 will beep once then twice and switch off, then just switch it on as normal and all was reset and it recognised all types of disc again. Happy day!
