hi there, it means that the iPod software is frozen. Try reseting it by clicking the lock button to the left and then to the right, then hold down menu and center button at the same time. This should reset your iPod software. If that doesn't work, you may have to format the iPod. To do this, go into iTunes, and connect your iPod, it should show up in the screen. Then hit the restore button and it will reset and reinstall it's software.

If you've already tried resetting the iPod, you might want to also try using a different pair of headphones to see if you encounter the same problem. While this may not necessarily resolve this specific issue, defective headphones can be one of the most common reasons why you would not hear audio playback.
