Use the "On-Screen" keyboard and see if you can select each character with the mouse - if it works then get another keyboard.

We you have installed the operating system (windows xp) but seems like you have not yet installed the drivers

There would be a second disc that you might have got from the manufacturer (application & drivers or Driver and utility CD) please insert the same and try to install the touchpad drivers

The Toshiba Satellite A135 series stock keyboard is not backlit, and that model only supports one type of non-backlit keyboard, which is interchangeable with several other Satellite series. When it first switches over to battery, you will generally see a flicker. The dimness is normal. Most laptops are configured to display the LCD screen when on battery power to allow longer operation on battery power. This can be overridden in the Control Panel -> Power Options but doing so will reduce the amount of time you will be able to work on battery power. The time before it enters sleep mode is generally shorter as well for the same reasons.
