Trying to reconfigure the router and a message comes up "unable to connect to router" I've done all the steps even reset to factory settings.

  • Chad Baldwin May 11, 2010

I'm gonna need a bit more info than that. Are you trying to configure the router via the provided software? Or by logging into the router through your web browser? (Internet Explorer, Firefox)

Are you trying to set up the router. You can do it manually without the CD. Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem. If your computer is not able to go online through the modem then you will need to call ISP first. If your computer is able to go online through the modem then you need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router. open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP. If you've tried reseting it, then the IP address is probably one of the following:

192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1

If you know how, try to ping the router via command prompt. You can do this by going to:

Start Menu>Run
then type
cmd

A black window will appear, try typing:

ping [one of the IP addresses above]

if nothing "replies" then you have a bad connection. If one of them does reply.

Try typing that IP address into the browser address bar to bring up the routers web interface.

If it's a linksys, try this for the username and password

Username: admin
Password: admin

for Netgear:

Username: admin
Password: password

I messed up my login passwords how can I reset?

I think you should try to reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure it manually.
Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it manually.

Hi,
Welcome to FixYa!
It seems that you are having problem with the D-link router. Since you've already done resetting the router, you can try to do a hard reset. Please follow the steps below.
1. Turn off the modem first.
2. At the back of the D-Link router, you will see there a tiny hole where you can press by a pen or a paper clip.
3. Press and hold it for at least 15 seconds while the router is on.
4. After 15 seconds, release the button then power down the router.
5. Power on the modem first then the router.
Note: Once you reset the router, all the settings inside the router will go back to its default, you will need to reconfigure it. If you are using PPPOE connection which requires a username and password from your ISP, you will need to reconfigure that inside the router as well the wireless settings.
Hope this information will help. Thank you for using FixYa!

Forgot mynetwork security key and I am trying to connect my daughters computer to the internet.

You'll need to reset the router then, unless someone else knows it, or it's printed on the router somewhere. There's a small reset button on the back, hold it in for 30 secs, you may need a pencil or something. Then you have to set up the router again. At least it's good practice and you won't forget it again in a hurry ;-) hopefully anyway.

When you reset the router, it comes back to factory default settings. Now you will need to reconfigure the router for the Internet connection.
If you have the CD then try to run the CD.
Or you can reconfigure the router without the CD also.

Only one computer at a time can connect to the internet. Both computers are connected to wireless internet via the router.

Make sure that the modem is connected to the Internet port of the router.
If it is connected to the Internet port and still only one computer is able to go on line then you will need to reset the router and reconfigure the router.
There must be a small reset button on your router. Hold it down for 30 seconds. Release it. wait for one minute. Now unplug the power and plug it back in. Wait for 1 minute.
Once you reset the router, it will come back to factory default settings.
You will need to reconfigure the router form the start according to your Internet service provider.
