Laptop CD/DVD drive won't detect CDs but...

Hi,

I've got a Toshiba Satellite PSAANA with Vista Home premium (32 bit). The CD/DVD won't detect any CDs anymore. I would put in the CD, it attempts to read it but it spits out the CD and comes up with a "Please Insert a Disk into drive D:\" message.

I've tried uninstalling the firmware and re-installing will still no success. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

- The laptop does know that the CD/DVD drive exists. I can see it in my computer, plus, it can read a DVD, just not a CD. Very strange and frustrating.

cheers

-   I have the same problem with an HP zv6000. It reads & writes to DVDs fine but will not read CDs. I had the same problem with Win XP Pro, now having it with Vista Ultimate. Also tried Vista Home Premium. Device Manager always claims "This device is working properly", I even tried swapping the drive with my wife's from her zv6000. I tried uninstalling & reinstalling the driver & I'm all out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The drive is a HL-DT-ST GCA 4080N, running Winblows Vista Ultimate, AMD Athlon 64 4000 (2.4GHz), 1 GB RAM. Thanks. -   bil_g

-   I can look at DVDs with no issue but when I put in a CD either software or music it won't read it, even if I use multimedia or itunes to try open the CD it'll ask me to put in a CD even though there is one in the drive....
Thanks for any help on this...-   RosieKK

sure..go to my computer..and see what disks are there?

if there are none, go to control panel, system device manager, and look at dvd drives and see that there is no marks on it(meaning that it's installed)

if not, remove that drive, click on actions/scan for hardware change, and go

you may need the install vista disk to make that happen, but that's unusual.

check for printer drivers here

- hmmm.well..you can see that it's partially good..it does happen the other way too..where the cd is good, and dvd is not(different lenses)..

those devices are about as reliable as the old floppy drives..
