Laptop CD/DVD drive won't detect CDs but will detect DVDs

Hi,

I've got a Toshiba Satellite PSAANA with Vista Home premium (32 bit). The CD/DVD won't detect any CDs anymore. I would put in the CD, it attempts to read it but it spits out the CD and comes up with a "Please Insert a Disk into drive D:\" message.

I've tried uninstalling the firmware and re-installing will still no success. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The laptop does know that the CD/DVD drive exists. I can see it in my computer, plus, it can read a DVD, just not a CD. Very strange and frustrating.

    cheers

I can look at DVDs with no issue but when I put in a CD either software or music it won't read it, even if I use multimedia or itunes to try open the CD it'll ask me to put in a CD even though there is one in the drive....

Thanks for any help on this...

I have the same problem with an HP zv6000. It reads & writes to DVDs fine but will not read CDs. I had the same problem with Win XP Pro, now having it with Vista Ultimate. Also tried Vista Home Premium. Device Manager always claims "This device is working properly", I even tried swapping the drive with my wife's from her zv6000. I tried uninstalling & reinstalling the driver & I'm all out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The drive is a HL-DT-ST GCA 4080N, running Winblows Vista Ultimate, AMD Athlon 64 4000 (2.4GHz), 1 GB RAM. Thanks.

Sure..go to my computer..and see what disks are there?

if there are none, go to control panel, system device manager, and look at dvd drives and see that there is no marks on it(meaning that it's installed)

if not, remove that drive, click on actions/scan for hardware change, and go

you may need the install vista disk to make that happen, but that's unusual.

check for printer drivers here

hmmm.well..you can see that it's partially good..it does happen the other way too..where the cd is good, and dvd is not(different lenses)..

those devices are about as reliable as the old floppy drives..

SOURCE: Optical drive won't detect CDs but will detect DVDs

This is another Vista issue that Microsoft has not fixed.
I have noticed alot of these includes the Optical drives.
So try this. It works for most people running Vista.
You need to edit your registry.

Click the Start button, click run, type in the window regedit than click OK
Close any opened Keys.
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE; than open SYSTEM; next open CURRENTCONTROLSET; than open CONTROL; than open CLASS & find
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} listed in the right half of the window right click on LOWERFILTERS & left click delete, then right click on UPPERFILTERS & left click delete.
Exit the registry, and reboot the laptop.
Hope this has helped.

Good Luck & kind Regards.

Get windows vista home premium

You can run a 32 bit technology OS on a 64 bit technology platform.

It will run pretty fast.

You just can't run a 64 bit technology OS on a 32 bit technology platform, though the 64 bit OS is recommended on a 64 bit platform.

Windows vista can't detect dvds or cds

Hi,
If your Laptop is still covered by the Warranty, then the best bet would be to send it back.
However, if it's not under Warranty, then you could always try and "Flash" the drives firmware. This should set the Drive back to the time it left the Manufacturers Factory. To accomplish this, you'll need to know the exact make and model of the DVD Drive inside your Laptop.
If you can get this information, and post it back here, then I can point you in the right direction as to where you may be able to download the software to flash the drive.

My dvd drive in my computer won't play dvds

1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.
