Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave runs for approx. 3 minutes then every thing goes blank

This microwave will run fine for about three minutes then every thing goes blank like it was unplugged, after about 10 - 15 minutes it powers back up and you can use it for another 3 minutes.

These are two different problems, so I will address them separately:

FOR RSM1958:

Sadly, we hear of this over and over.

This is usually due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

GE had a campaign (but not a recall, mind you!) covering several models.

Details are in their bulletin at http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf

Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit. I just think the difference is that GE has stopped paying for the repairs.

The parts kit (that GE used to pay for) is part # WB27X10489 and is shown here: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/wb27x10489_ge_mag_stir_kit.jpg

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

FOR JYVIBAR:

Please reply back (contact me directly http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk ) and let me know when and how it is failing.

It may be failing when you open or close the door, when you hit the Start button, a few seconds after you hit the Start button, etc.

How do I turn off the cooling option on my Novamatic microwave?

The word COOL is displayed when the microwave goes into a cooling cycle. The cool cycle is a feature that ensures the operating components of the microwave (Inverter and Magnetron) are cooled after operation by running the fan inside the microwave.
The cooling function is activated whenever the microwave runs for over 3 minutes or is operated twice within a 10 minute period. The word COOL is displayed to tell you why the fan is still running. You do not have to wait for the cool cycle to complete before using the microwave again, simply enter the cooking operation you wish to perform and the cool cycle will stop and the microwave will perform the cooking operation you have just entered.

Microwave won't restart after baking potatoes.

If your microwave is not a convection then the moisture most probably is somehow getting to the controls as potatoes has quite a bit.

My JVM1653 loses power after 3 minutes of heating

it may have been the hi voltage at the magnetron, but the shut down is your heat thermocouple mounted on the magnetron side and when the mag overheats this thermocouple opens up and shuts off power to the mag to prevent overheating and fire

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your microwave has a problem and it could be one of three things, 1. The magnatron tube. cost on average is $60.00 to $120.00 2. It could be the copacitor......average cost is around $45.00 3. The diode. that is around $35.00 None of these include the labor....So depending on the age of the microwave and what you paid for it, it may be cheaper in the long run to purchase a new microwave, I cannot tell you what of the three things it is without testing them. If you have any other questions just ask.......
