Re: MY LAPTOP IS ON AND NOT SHOWING ON THE SCREEN
Hi, check the RAM, remove it and clean the contacts, if still no sucess then check it with another Working RAM, this will confirm if the RAM is BAD,,let me know..dont fall prey to the non-qualified engineers (i.e ur comp person)

Is your laptop booting on switching it on, ie, it is showing hard disk activity and shows initial boot screen. If yes, while switching on press F8 button very frequently. You will get a screen showing the options for booting. Choose a safe mode option and restore your computer to an earlier date. This may solve your problem.
On the other hand just switching on the computer shows monitor with yellow and black stripes, you may have to take it to a service center.
Unfortunately..your display may be shot...Is it a Compaq Presario? These laptops have a history of display problems...I have a Compaq Presario R3000 and the display is showing a reddish color in the left bottom corner of the screen and my brother had a similar problem with a Compaq laptop where the monitor stopped working....Unfortunately it would cost more to replace the monitor than to buy an Apple MacBook...
You can buy a cable and attach the laptop to a desktop monitor and it will work although you will lose the mobility of the laptop which is what makes a laptop so appealing.
If your laptop has a NVidia graphics card you can go to display in control panel and set it up to use Plug & Play Monitor but you may need to use safe mode or you wont be able to see anything because your screen doesn't work....You might get lucky and when you plug in the cable (just like you would to attach a PC tower to a monitor), it will work and you will be able to make the monitor the dominant screen.
if the power is on and the screen does not show up , try to hook an external monitor using the VGA cable. If the screen does show up, it means that the problem is in the laptop LCD monitor itself. Otherwise if the external monitor does not show up, that means your laptop does not boot anymore to the operating system. Try to turn off the power and remove the power cable and battery on the laptop. Then press and hold the power button for 8 secs. Then reinsert the battery and power cables on the laptop then turn on the laptop. If there is still no screen displayed then call Lenovo for repair of your laptop.
Attach and external monitor and boot the machine. If you don't have one, ask around your friends and family... someone has a monitor.
If you can see stuff on the monitor when it boots, but when you boot with no monotor the laptop screen is blank, then you most likely have a dead lcd panel on the notebook. It would need to be replaced.
If the external monitor also shows nothing during boot then you likely have larger problems.
