DVP642 DVD Player is only working in Audio mode

My Philips DVP642 has worked perfectly for over a year now. But suddenly now its only working in Audio mode. It recognizes the DVD but no picture turns up. I can only hear the audio. Any help appreciated.
Thanks,

I have a similar issue. I've had mine for a few years and it always worked fine, then I replaced it with a newer one and it sat unused for a few months. Then I tried hooking it up this weekend and it plays audio but no picture. I've tried hooking it up two ways, with component video cables (this gives an actual scrambled image on the DVDs AND the Philips screens) and with a single video connection (yellow connector), which gives no image at all. Not sure what could have happened, but if there is a solution, I'd be glad to hear it! I have tried two televisions, with the same result.

How is your DVD player hooked to the tv, what cables are you using?

Mine does the same. Cannot get a picture using the Yellow RCA output. Use an S-video cable if you can - it should still work. If you get a black and white picture using the S-video output, go to MENU > VIDEO page and change the output from PyBywhateveritis to S-video and the color will come back. I only found out mine was broken when I needed to use the s-video cable for something else and tried switching to the Composite Video (RCA) to no avail no matter how many cables or TV inputs I tried.

The main board of your Philips DVP should be trouble shooted. Actually this is a very skilled work, needs a sound knoledge in electronics, and expereince in repair. The fault lies on its main board itself. OK.

In my Philips DVD players, recently I have tried to play few film DVDs, and it showed region error/or wrong region. Could you please help me out with this and tell me what should I do?? I talked to the...

The DVD you're using is probably from elsewhere than the region you live in. It is almost certainly possible to temporarily change the region by using a trick which will not damage your machine in any way. Google "Philips DVP642 region hack" and there will be an answer.

I have a Philips DVP642 DVD player. It has worked

First try a soft reset... unplug for 20 minutes.
Otherwise - the laser is dirty or misaligned.
A Repair shop can clean and align for about $50.
It takes specialized equipment and templates to align the laser - not something you can do on your own.

Lens cleaner discs don't work.

Philips DVP642 No Disc

clean the disks as well as possible with cleaner and soft cloth. the problem is not the disks, but the fact that the DVD reader has become really sensitive.

if that wont help, open up the case (screws on sides and back), and clean the DVD mechanism and lens as best as possible.

you still might be SOL, but its worth a try since its out of warranty, and a replacement player is $60.

Tray is not opening

To open the tray this is not a perfect fix, but it will allow to use it. After the unit is powered on: 1)Hit the "Open/Close" button 2)Wait a while (you will get the timing down with practice) 3)Tap gently, yet briskly with fingertips at area in the attached pic, that the red arrow points to I think the problem is that the tray becomes unbalanced somehow. Because when a DVD is in, the drive opens fine, only when there is no disc do you have to tap on the unit.
