Question about Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 for PC

Outlook problem!! Whenever the outlook opens up, it shuts down right away. A report error to microsoft message appears and once I click on to it, a regret message appears and the outlook express programme shuts down. Pls help as I have not seen mail on my outlook for over three weeks!!!!

To resolve this problem, use the following steps. On the Start menu click Run. In the Run dialog box, type the following command:

Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Note:

I keep getting the message The data file 'personal folders' was not closed properly when I open Outlook, how can I prevent this from happening?


Hi,


The underlying reason why Outlook displays this "data file" check is very simple. There is a single flag in the header of the data file that is a Boolean value (True or False). While you use Outlook the value of this flag is constantly changing as the data file is updated. When the update begins the value is changed to False and then when the update completes the value is changed back to True (implying the update is finished and successful).


So, the key to the problem is the shut down process because once the Outlook.exe process is exited this flag value cannot be changed. If the Outlook.exe process was terminated prematurely or a 3rd party add-in did not properly set the flag value to True then the flag value can be left at False. If you start Outlook with a data file where the value of the flag is False you are guaranteed to see the "data file" check. If the value of the flag is True then you will not see the "data file" check.


Right now, there are a few known common causes for this issue:


- Shutting down Windows before the Outlook.exe process has exited

- 3rd party add-ins improperly "closing" the data file

- Outlook crashing

- Non-Outlook process accessing the data file

When you shut down Outlook, the Outlook window goes away, but the Outlook.exe process can continue to run for some time. That's why you can see Outlook.exe sitting in Task Manager for a few minutes after closing the Outlook window. If you shut down Windows while the Outlook.exe process is still running Windows will not wait for the Outlook.exe process to exit. So, you increase the likelihood of encountering the "data file check" issue the next time you start Outlook (because the Outlook.exe process was not able to "close" your data file(s) completely before Windows was shut down).

On the other hand, if you leave Outlook running when you shut down Windows the Outlook.exe process will continue to run and exit on its own. When Windows is shut down, it sends messages to all visible window frames telling them to quit, and will wait for those programs to quit before shutting down. Not until all processes with open windows have exited will Windows finally shut down. This is somewhat counter-intuitive to most people as traditional training has always advised manually closing applications before shutting down Windows.

Logged on and my email icon was missing as well as other icons. tried to start outlook and the message is simply cannot start outlook. cannot make google my home page as dell4me contiues to override any...


This issue may occur if you deploy Outlook 2003 with the Microsoft Office 2003 Custom Installation Wizard and specify a personal folder (.pst) file in the Windows Installer transform (MST file) by using the Default location for PST files path option. The problem occurs because you specify a file name instead of a folder path.

To resolve this issue for future installations of Office, use the Custom Installation Wizard to edit the MST file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Change Office User Settings page (page 10 of 24), expand Microsoft Outlook 2003, expand Miscellaneous, and then click PST Settings.
  2. In the right pane, double-click Default location for PST files, and then type the path that you want in the Default location for PST files box. For example, type %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\.
  3. Click OK, and then follow the steps to complete the wizard. When you have corrected the MST file, deploy Office by using the correct MST file.
To resolve this issue for an existing installation of Outlook that is experiencing this problem, specify the .pst file by using the Mail icon in Control Panel.

  1. Locate Outlook.exe.

    Outlook.exe is typically located in one of the following folders, depending on the version of Outlook that you are running:
    • Microsoft Office Outlook 2010 C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
    • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

Cannot open outlook window - had it open checking e-mail and computer 'jammed up' and would not do anything - shut down and restarted - tried to open outlook and window flashed open (white) and immediately...


You could try and repair office by going into add/remove programs if it's XP, or programs and features if its vista.

Both are found in control panel.

Find your office 2003 line in add/remove programs, click uninstall, and you should get a repair option. YOu will probably need the disk to repair it.

There is a compatibility update from Microsoft for Vista and Outlook 2003:

It doesn't address specific problems there, but it tells you how to get the compatibility updates. Sounds like a good place to start.

Personal Data File did not close properly


Hope this solves it for you! Here's the official word from Microsoft:
If you receive one or more of these error messages, you may experience performance issues until Outlook finishes the reconciliation process for the .ost file or for the .pst file. The following gear icon is displayed in the status bar while Outlook checks the data file in the background: Collapse this imageExpand this imageol2007gearicon.jpg When this icon disappears, the .pst file or the .ost file is reconciled. If you exit Outlook while the gear icon is present, reconciliation must restart the next time that you run Outlook. We recommend that you leave Outlook running until the gear icon disappears before you exit Outlook.

An incorrectly shut down .ost file or .pst file may occur for one of the following reasons:
  • Antivirus scanning of the file
  • Forced Microsoft Windows shutdown before the Outlook.exe process shuts down completely
  • Outlook add-ins
If you see this issue frequently, and you have to exit Outlook shortly before you shut down your computer, it may be better to shut down Windows while Outlook is still running. We recommend that you do this instead of exiting Outlook and then shutting down Windows shortly after that.

When you try to start a Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2003 program, you may receive the following error message or an error message that is similar to the following:

Error 25090. Office Setup encountered a problem with the Office Source Engine, system error: -2147023836. Please open SETUP.CHM and look for "Office Source Engine" for information on how to resolve this problem.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

* Two people installed Office on the same computer.
* Both installations were completed by using the AllUsers="" parameter to set the installation for the installing user account only.
* When both people were prompted to remove files that were copied locally at the end of Setup, both people did not remove the files.
* One of the two people removed Office.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, start the Setup program for Office. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Microsoft Office 2003 CD in your CD drive or DVD drive.
2. If the Setup program does not start automatically, locate the Setup.exe file on the CD, and then double-click the file to start Setup.
3. After the Setup window appears, cancel Setup, and then respond to the prompts to exit Setup.

Note: You do not have to complete the Setup program. Setup fixes the error condition when it is first invoked.

you need to run a inbox repair tool.

Make sure you close outlook

Start > My computer > Tools > Folder options > General tab click on show hidden files and folders > Apply ok

Go to the follow wing location to find scanpst.exe
if you are using Outlook 2007
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12
If you using Outlook 2003
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11

Double click on SCANPST.EXE
Click on browse go to following locaiton where your pst file as been save
C:\Documents and Settings\Robyn M. Drothler\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst

Click on start > then click on repair
