The disc may be quote, "Corrugated", hence the laser is having a hard time following mis ~ aligned structural pattern. Try to use a CD ~ Lens Cleaner. :)
You probably need a blu-ray drive. A blu-ray drive is essentially three parts, a CD type player, A DVD type player and a Blu-ray type player. Any one or combination can fail. DVD type games may work but not Blu-ray movies. Blu-ray games OK but not DVDs, etc. Contact Sony for the nearest repair center.

You might want to go somewhere that works on game systems and get the disk reading laser checked and make sure it is clean and also make sure the game disks are clean and not scratched.

The optical lens in your blu ray drive is going out. It needs more to play games then to watch movies and cd's. This is a very common problem with the ps3. If you want to replace it yourself, you can find many replacements for your len on eBay and you can always google a decent tutorial for step by step instructions on how to replace it. You may have dust on the Blu-ray lens. The lens has 3 different wavelengths, one for games and bluray cds, one for cds and one for movies. The best thing to do is to use a disc cleaner which you can buy down at your local electronics store. The cd contains small brushes which clean the len of dust and dirt. Also try removing as much dust of your unit as possible as playstation 3 consoles are dust magnets.

Sounds like your laser lense, sensor that detects the ones and zeros from the laser, is dirty. Try using a cleaning CD, you can get them at any electronics store/department. Ex: Walmart, RadioShack, Best Buy.

There are some reasons of PS3 disc reading or other errors. But don't waste money to find someone to fix it yet! It may be a minor issue that you can be fixed by yourself.
