If the overall brightness of the screen varies in different areas, this is usually a result of the backlight getting old - the backlight is like a very thin flourescent tube that runs along the bottom of the screen and provides the illumination. When backlight tubes are ageing they also often appear a bit pink, this can be seen very easily on the blank white page of a word document.
If your backlight is failing , some engineers will replace it - but it is more common that the entire screen is changed.
