My 80gb ps3 did the same exact thing. I kept trying to get to install, but it just would not. called SCEA and they told me i'd have to send it in and pay about $200.00 for a refurb. So, i completly took it apart. Cleaned every thing, put new thermal compound on it. AND, presto install completed now i can use my ps3. Did not reflow just cleaned and new compund. And learned I should just update using USB flash drive. Works like a charm. Good luck. Hope this helps.
