Karcher pressure washer motor surging, then motor cuts out

Karcher Electric 1700psi pressure washer. Surging, will not shut off completely in standby mode...a bit of water spurts out the front vents on every on/off surge.

Then it cuts out like it has overheated.

You didn't say if this is a gas or electric machine. I will give suggestions for a gas model. These small engines have air and fuel filters. check both, as it sounds like its getting bad air/fuel mixture. Also try a new spark plug. If this is electric let me know, I'll new some more info.

The washer will no longer do the spin cycle. It makes a grinding type of noise. What might be wrong? How easy is it to take these machines apart? Thanks, Troy

Hi Troy from retired Englishman in France!

We have had a Bosch for 16-20 years (not sure exactly). Brushes wore down a few months ago causing intermittent running and F5 I think. I changed the motor (and belt whilst I was at it) as brush changing is really only a temporary measure- subsequent brushes tend to wear down very quickly. Cost me around £250 but still cheaper than a replacement machine (which is what 'Management' wanted!
Although Bosch washers are very well made and heavy, once the back is accessed the motor and belt are easy to see.
Drum speed is totally controlled by the electronics board feeding the appropriate voltage to the motor- in the same way clockwise and anticlockwise.

If you are reasonably confident [and competent;-0) ] I would suggest removing the back BUT OBVIOUSLY WATCH THAT POWER IS STILL ON and listen whilst it washes then spins.
Question- could there be a metal item sticking through the holes in the drum- or is it really a grinding sound- like a bearing failing? Is the washer old and used enough for something like that?
You should be able to tell by listening with the back off.

Comment: motor and/or belt change- easy; Bearings? I would suggest that depends on your mechanical abilities.
I purchase all my spares for whatever- washer, ride-on mower, Karcher pressure washer etc from the UK via the web.

Good luck,

John C

Just had machine to a repairman because it wouldn't spin. Well now it spins, but when water runs in it won't cut off and agitate.

flip up the lid and check the clear plastic hose going to the pressure switch.that's what shuts the water off.if that line is off or has a hole in it the washer will just keep filling and overflow.he must of put a new motor coupling in and the hose could of fell of the pressure switch when he put the washer back together

Agitor not working, tub not spinning

power may not be getting to the motor or the lid switch may need replaced. If there is a green light flashing on the circut board attached to the motor, it will indicate what is wrong by the number of flashing lights in a sequence. If there is no flashing light or no light at all, the motor may not be getting power or is no longer good. Some washers have an inline fuse in the wires going to the motor that sometimes gets blown during a power surge. It is easy to replace for only a couple $. Feel the wires coming from the motor (unplug the machine and wait several minutes first) there may be heat shrink tubing around where the fuse is at. Carefully cut away the heat shrink exposing the fuse. An ohm meter testing the line on each side of the fuse will let you know if it needs replaced. When I replaced mine I used a scrap piece of wire to jump them together temporarily until I bought a new pico fuse online. just wrap with electrical tape and plug back into a surge protecter until fixed properly. Hope this helps.

I have a Karcher K3.97 pressure washer. I think I'm losing pressure somewhere because the motor surges on and off every few seconds. No obvious leaks though. Could there be an internal leak through a...

Dear Sir(s),
The majority of power washers have a spill valve or sometimes called a Control Valve. This spill valve will contract when the gun is closed. As it contracts it switches off a micro switch. Also at the base of the spill valve, an opening opens to let water circulate. Now if this Spill Valve is defective, it will make the machine lose pressure and it will make the machine switch on and off also. I sometimes service the Spill valve and lubricate with special Silicon grease. But if the end of the Spill Valve is not closing correctly, then I suggest that the Spill Valve be renewed. To come to see the Spill Valve, you have to open the cover. Most probably you see wires or a thick wire attached to the head. The part attached to the head contains the micro-switch. Remove the Miro-Switch holder and then you might see screws holding the jammed or faulty spill valve. If you cannot pull the spill valve out, try attaching water and sometimes you can switch on the machine for a second...and with the pressure,...the spill valve will be spitted out.
The switching of ON and OFF due to a faulty Spill Valve, will for sure damage the capacitor. A damaged spill valve gives all these symptoms. Machine going on and off while gun closed and while gun opened, and added to these,... pressure gets less. One small other hint....if all is OK with the machine, and when spraying the machine goes on and off....this is due to a blocked nozzel.
Regards,
Fulltech.

Is there dribbling water coming out of the casing if you plug in the incoming hose but don't switch it on? This is usually the case. Either the seals have worn on the pistons (usually 3) or you have a cracked pump casing.

Karcher Pressure washer

Hi
don't know if this will help, but when I use mine, to start the pressure up I have to turn the nozzle to fine spray then turn it to the power spray and it works every time, shouldn't have to do this but I got it for nothing.
