Gateway 1450 Solo - power light on amber , won't boot

When the AC cord is pluuged in or the laptop is on battery only, the power/charge indicator lamp is always amber, and the laptop won't boot.

What's the deal?

  • 3 more comments
  • chaserb Mar 15, 2008

just the light comes on; the fan doesn't start and the laptop doesn't boot

  • chaserb Mar 15, 2008

so the CMOS battery needs replacing; I've pulled it out, and will try that (will have to wait until Radio Shack is open to get one).

  • chaserb Mar 15, 2008

replaced the CMOS battery, still no go; the charge light comes on immediately when any kind of power is applied, whether it is just the battery, or when the AC adaptor is plugged in. laptop still will not boot.

  • chaserb Mar 15, 2008

I've got another 1450, and the AC adapter works fine with it; I switched batteries and the charge light comes on when only the battery is in, and it should only come on when the AC adapter is plugged in.

  • chaserb Mar 15, 2008

checked with the person I got the laptop from and person said mobo was fried (power surge), so using it for parts.

    Thanks for the help anyways!

Hi Does the laptop come on at all or just the light comes on

Hi then you probably find the battery needs replacing have you done this or are you able to do this

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2008

Hi try replacing this then post back here and let me know what happens.
Failing it being the battery it could be either the hard drive has got damaged but if this was the case you would still get the dos screen boot up at least it would come on and do something so its not likely that.
Are you 100% sure the mains lead is working can you try it on anything else or test it?
Also does the light come on as soon as the lead is plugged into the laptop or does the light only come on when you try switching it on? let me know ok

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2008

Hi just been asking around for you ok.
Right the amber light is green when the laptop is working normal it goes amber as the main battery gets lower then goes out when battery is totally flat if this light dont turn green when the mains cable is plugged in then this indicates either a problem with the mains adaptor or that the battery is totally dead is their anyway you can check the mains lead as the light should be green when the mains lead is plugged in

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. My Gateway 1450 will not power up. For the last 2 weeks that battery light has been red (battery need recharging). i had the unit turned off with no ac power to it all weekend and not it will not power up....

The motherboard battery is just a little round battery that you can buy at almost any retailer in most pcs. The model number to the battery is usually a CR 2032. This battery does not receive any power from your power supply. Have you noticed your PC loosing time over the last few months? This is usually a good indication that the motherboard battery is dying. The lights that you refer to though should only partain to the rechargable battery of the notebook. During the past two weeks while the red light was on, was the AC adaptor plugged in to the laptop and plugged into an AC source? If your AC adaptor has been plugged in and is not charging the notebook battery then there could be one or both of the following problems: your notebook battery could be bad or your AC adaptor could be bad. Something you may or may not know is that it is not good to keep the AC adaptor plugged in all the time. This causes the notebook battery not to fully discharge after being charged. Over a long period of time, the battery will not even charge anymore. My suggestion is that if you know someone with a similar AC adaptor to yours, borrow it to see if it charges your battery. If the battery doesn't charge then you know to replace. However, I am almost certain that you problem is the battery. Sometime older laptops like the one I have has a reset button on the underside. If yours has one try removing the battery and leave it out. Then plug in the power and press and hold the reset button for 10 to 20 seconds. If no reset button is on yours then do the same process with the battery removed and power adding, but hold the power button instead.

Gateway solo 1450 won't power up

Fix for Gateway Solo 1450

If you are comfortable soldering and opening the laptop, then this is your day.

I was fixing a Gateway Solo 1450 that shown only red light indicator. Push the power on botton and didn't respond. Did all sorts suggested reseating no availed. Here the solution I made:

1. Go to Gateway website and look for taking out the keyboard. That's the only support I got as far as user/service manual I need.
2. Take the 5 silver philip screws and 4 black screws from the CPU heat sink. Take out the CD-ROM with one screw.
3. Take out the palm besel cover. Note, the screws while taking them out by drawing on the paper their location.
4. Take out the metal that covering the 5 bottons. Again draw the location of screws.
5. Take out the remaining screws from the motherboard.

The main event.
1. Check the 3 soldered legs of the DC jack. If they are loose then Resolder them. If not still resolder them anyway.
2. I found out the Power botton was intermittent. So with a fine soldering tip (30 watts from Radioshack) and Soldering braid. Clear the soldering tip (pile it until no solder on it). With a steady hand use the braid each leg of the Power botton, then pull it with tweezer. Note the orientation is very important. Mark the front face of the power button. The good news you have 4 available switches to use. Next do the same to the last switch botton (a person icon from the dash board). I chose the last right botton. I switched their place.
3. Assemble the unit backward as you first disassembled it.
4. Check the memory. Use eraser from the pencil and rub the memory fine pins back and forth until they look shiny. Insert/reseat it/them.

Hope this helps you. Good Luck.
