Question about Computers & Internet
Anyway, long story short, this is typical problem with HP NX6110 series
caused by loose Intel chip.
Can be fixed, long discussion about it in HP forum: http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1253948021656+28353475&threadId=1096080
Permanent fix when reflowing the Intel ICH chip in a good gsm shop. http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/2622/nx6110ic5.jpg
Or temporary when putting something on the chip to apply constant pressure when you reassemble the unit.
Warning: Technical skills needed. DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!
Alternatively if laptop in not freezing it can be still used when booting from external drive or usb key.
Easyest solution is selling it on ebay with your story and getting new one from there. Good luck ;)

Maybe the harddrive is not properly connected or its damaged. make sure the jumper settings are correct that is set as master and the IDE cable is firmly fixed.
