Unlock an iPod Model A1199
Although the second generation iPod Nano (also known as 2G) uses a four-digit pass code that prevents unauthorized access to your iPod by locking the screen, you can also unlock the device by plugging it into your computer's USB 2.0 port.
When the 2G iPod Nano is connected to the computer it is synchronized, and automatically unlocks the screen according to the official Apple site.
In order to successfully unlock the Nano it must be plugged into the primary computer used for synchronizing content.

Click "Start," "All Programs" and "iTunes" on your PC's desktop, or click "iTunes" on the Macintosh's desktop dock.
Plug the iPod Nano's cable into the docking port on the iPod Nano.
Plug the other end into the USB port on the computer to open iTunes.
Click "Controls" at the top of the iTunes' menu, and select "Eject iPod."
The iPod Nano's screen will be unlocked once it is ejected from your computer.

How do i unlock my ipod nano screen???

i am glad to assist you. If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with
which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the
device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced
with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your
data will not be present Follow the steps that i have outlined below. If this does not completely help your situation
please let me know and i will be glad to assist you. According to Apple, if you have forgotten the code, you can unlock the IPod by doing the
following: 1 If you can't unlock IPod using either [the code or connecting it to the computer you use to
manage its songs. . . Plug the iPod USB cable into the bottom of the iPod Nano. 2 Plug the other end of the iPod USB cable into a free USB port on a Mac or PC computer. 3 Open the iTunes application by clicking on the Dock icon on a Mac or using the Start menu on a
PC. 4 Click on the name of your iPod Nano under the "Devices" list in the iTunes window. 5 Click on the "Sync" button to establish a connection between your iPod and the computer. 6 Click on the eject symbol next to your iPod's name after the syncing process has finished. 7 Unplug your iPod Nano. The device will be unlocked and you will be able to access all normal
features again. if that does not work you can restore your iPod to factory settings using iPod Updater. Please
note that this will erase all data on your iPod. Afterwards, you can add your music and data back to your iPod. If you want to change the primary computer that your IPod is associated with, do this: 1. Restore your iPod. WARNING: The restore process cannot be undone. All of your songs and files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data. 2. Connect your iPod to the computer that you want to be the primary computer. 3. Open iTunes and synchronize. Apple also notes that company "representatives cannot unlock an iPod if you forget your
combination. If you can't unlock your iPod and you don't have access to the primary computer,
your only option is to restore the IPod, which will erase all music and data." If you need further assistance please feel free to follow up with a comment and i will be here to
assist you. If this assisted you please feel free to rate the comment. thanks and have a great
    day.

Washed comes on when plugged into computer and functions but not when unplugged

You should try resetting the ipod by pressing and holding both the menu and center buttons down until you see an apple appear on the screen or for at least ten seconds. If nothing happens by resetting it without being connected to your computer; I would try restoring it using itunes i've copy and pasted those steps below for you

How to restore iPod (ARTICLE NUMBER HT1339) Ensure that you have an active Internet connection
as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may
need to be downloaded to your computer. Download and install the latest version of iTunes
if you do not already have it installed. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your
computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came
with your iPod. After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the
Source panel in iTunes. Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will
see information about your iPod appear in the
Summary tab of the main iTunes windows. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted
with one or more restore options that may prompt
iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod
Software. The 4 possible restore options are: Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software
version already on iPod. Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod
Software version already on iPod even though a
newer version is available. Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest
iPod Software available. Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest
iPod Software available. If you are using a Mac, a message will appear
prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and
password. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen
indicating that the first stage of the restore
process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen
with instructions specific to the iPod model you
are restoring. Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect
it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to
older iPod models). Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to
computer to complete restore (typically applies
newer iPod models). During the stage 2 of the restore process, the
iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress
bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to
the computer or iPod Power adapter during this
stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see
since the backlight on the iPod display may be
off. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete
and the iPod is connected to the computer, the
iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking
you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences
similar to when you connected your iPod for the
    first time.

If after a reset and restore it still will not work while not connected; I would try putting it in a DRY bowl of rice over night. You may still have moisture in the ipod. Usually rice works pretty good for this issue. Hopefully, the ipod wasn't damaged and this helped you out. Cheers :)
