Here is a quote from the Epson website.

"These products were developed and released at a time when large capacity cards such as 2GB or 4GB SD cards were not commercially available or widely available. Therefore the printer and its memory card reader do not recognise larger capacity memory cards."

So you're stuck with it I'm afraid.

Just picked up B271A for price of a pint, but it doesn't read any sd card I have. Is this because the machine is too old to read newer cards?

Check specification of the SD card. Effectively, some older devices have a very limites capacity to read SD. Do you have a manual? Download if you don't

It wont read the cards

A: Make sure you're using a supported memory card. See the table below for specifications:

Memory Card Type Maximum Capacity CompactFlash Card
(Type I and Type II--3.3V only) 8GB Microdrive (3.3V only) 4GB SD (Secure Digital) 2GB MultiMediaCard 1GB

If you connect a compatible CompactFlash (CF) adapter that can read 8GB memory cards, you can also use the memory cards listed below (with a capacity up to 8GB):

  • Memory Stick
  • Memory Stick Duo
  • Memory Stick PRO
  • Memory Stick PRO Duo
  • xD-Picture Card
  • SmartMedia Card (3.3V only)

Ive put an sdhc card in it and its sayjng the cards broken

I don't think it supports SDHC (like the picturemate 250).
Try a 2GB SD card.

Prining with Win7 64 on a networked Epson PictureMate on XP

As you did not specify your printer's exact model, I would suggest to use this web page to look for the Windows 7 drivers for your printer:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportWindows7.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes
Both Windows 7 32-bit & 64-bit drivers could be found using this web page.

EPSON PictureMate will not recognise printer cartidge.

This happened to me. I could not get any help. So I swabed the contacts w/alcohol and success!! Mind you, my Picture Mate is over 2 years old, I would not try this w/a printer under warranty unless directed by Epson.

Good Luck
