Usually you have to remove the outer cover of the microwave, and if it's an over the range model, it will have to pulled down from the wall.

If you don't have your installation instructions, you can download them here.

FYI, these models usually have a 5-year warranty on the magnetron.

CAN I USE A LG2M246 050F magnetron INSTEAD OF LG2M246 21GT can't seem to find 21gt around

This is a hard question to answer, normally the last 3 to 4 letters and numbers indicate where the part was made, if that holds true the magnetron will work, however! I would go online to GE and contact customer support and the technical department for answers since we are dealing with a high voltage device.

Hi, I have a GE JES1334 1100 Watts Microwave Oven, it can be power on, but doesn't heat, should I change any part to get it back to work? Thanks!

Hello, W/D here.
There are many variations of your model. Check the fuse first. That's the most common failure, and the cheapest to fix.
I checked the price of magnetrons and, if that is what is wrong with yours (which it sounds like), the cost of the magnetron is more to replace than the price of a new microwave. ($162 vs. $115), plus shipping if you bought the part on-line (I checked, and add in labor if you have someone else do the work. Your best bet is to take it somewhere and get a free estimate for repair, and decide from there. It may not be the magnetron, but it's impossible for me to tell from here.
Best regards, --W/D--

I have a GE Spacemaker and it is about 9 yrs. old. Sometines it heats; other times it doesn't. I change settings and sometimes that works. Is this something that can be repaired or is this a sign I need...

When the microwave is not heating, that means the magnetron is not working. This is what provides the heat to the microwave. I do believe the magnetron has a 10 year warranty.

If you wish to replace it, here is how:

  1. Unplug Microwave at least few hours before
  2. Remove Microwave from above oven range by somebody holding Microwave from ground unscrew the screws from cabinet
  3. Remove top cover of Microwave
  4. Make sure to keep screws correctly in a place you remember what goes where
  5. Make sure capacitor is discharged, GE manual inside Microwave says capacitor will discharge within 30 seconds once it is off. As a precaution check the voltage in capacitor to make sure there is no electricity
  6. Remove other panels around magnetron part
  7. You need to remove lot of connecting wires, should be careful to note down what goes where
  8. If possible take digital photos to refer back when you put everything back together
  9. You may need to remove transformer to easily remove and replace Magnetron. If you can't remove Magnetron easily then remove bottom panel of the Microwave and remove transformer
  10. Now it should be easy to remove magnetron
  11. Replace new magnetron and screw it. We had to put one outside part from old magnetron to new one because new one was missing that. Check to make sure both old and new one are exactly the same
  12. Make sure put all wires properly back
  13. Now put transformer back and screw it
  14. Put capacitor panel in place and screw it
  15. This might be a good time to test the Microwave to make sure it works fine now
  16. Now cover the top panels and start to screw everything
  17. Once everything assembled put the Microwave back above range put screws from top

My ge countertop microwave suddenly became very hot and seems totally dead

Chances are the magnetron overheated and the thermal protector (thermal cutout or thermostat) on the magnetron tripped and interrupted the power.

This may be due to a blocked air vent, clogged filter, blocked outside vent, failed internal cooling fan, or failing magnetron.

There should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille or elsewhere, and it is very helpful when troubleshooting, & testing.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help here.

I'd recommend that your bookmark this link to your favorites.

Accessing some parts may require you to pull the oven from the wall and remove the cover.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

If it's under magnetron warranty, GE will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

Warranty terms are detailed in your owner's manual.

If you prefer to arrange service by an authorized service center, GE Customer Service is here.

Smelled like something was burning and stopped heating. Turntable and lights work

March 2012 - GE does not support customers mad.gif

I have GE microwave with a failed Magnetron. It is emitting large sparks. Upon removing the magnetron I found that the sparks left residue where they are leaking from the cylindrical shaped piece on the end of the Magnetron.

The Magnetron is under warranty.

I called GE PARTS, GE support and GE consumer relations department. They changed their policy two weeks ago and require a service technician to replace the part.

Since I already removed the part the service technician would have to put in 3 screws and plug in the cable...FOR $220...I PAID $229 FOR THE MICROWAVE NEW!!!!

Further research:

GE Microwaves can spontaneously turn on and start a fire - see Consumer Reports web page here:

Further evidence GE retroactively changing their warranties:

Ge spacemaker microwave jvm/1650

Mmmm it's so easy,
First disconect the power, take the cover off, moslitly there would be 5 screws and two tab's on the top.
inside on the right hand side the magnetron it's a sylver box measuring about 4 in x 4 in x 5 in. It will have a plasic cover moslitly that would have to be remove first then on the magnetron there is 4 crews and one connector.
It should fall downard after.
If you have a power supply after the secondary , that may also be your problem.
