The front 3mm port is disconnected and I don't know where to hook it back up. I can't tell from the manual.

The front 3mm ports are for mic input / headphones output. The pin connectors are as follows. You need to use the JAudio header, which are in the lower-right corner of the motherboard closest to the front of the case when it's installed.

This header has 14 pins, and allows user to connect the front audio out put cable with the PC front panel. It will disable the output on back panel audio connectors.
Within this header, pin 1 is in the lower left corner, and pin 14 is in the upper right corner, like this:

2 ... ... ... 14
1 ... .. ... 13

The pinouts are:

1 Mic in/center
2 Ground
3 Mic power/Bass
4 Audio power
5 Right line out/Speaker out Right
6 Right line out/Speaker out Right
7 Reserved
8 Key
9 Left line out/Speaker out Left
10 Left line out/Speaker out Left
11 Right line in/Rear speaker Right
12 Right line in/Rear speaker Right
13 Left line in/Rear speaker Left
14 Left line in/Rear speaker Left

FRONT PANEL AUDIO HEADER PINOUTS CONFIGURATION HELP

It really is your choice. You can use the AC'97 or HD but not both. Follow the wiring for the choice you select. Personally I'd go with the AC'97 setup as alot of games have issue with the Realtek driver. Hope this helps.

Searching for a wiring diagram for my E machine....

Industry Standard Architecture exists here.

The pin arrangements for USB are standard, some usb headers are attached to the boards in the opposite direction but the pin arrangement is the same.

USB headers consist of 9 pins, arranged as 4 pins and one missing, and 5 pins like this:
x x x x o

these are marked as:

vcc1 usb 0- usb 0+ n/c
vcc2 usb 1- usb 2+ n/c

colours are:
red, white green black

Note: some motherboards have these connectors back to front but the connection sare as per the diagram

the audio header is arranged as follows:

X X X O X

top row = gnd, vcc5, mic2,n/c line

bottom row = mic1,mic r, line out,front spk r, lin out L

The cable colours may differ but the preformed plug will only fit in one place /direction

Audio deosn't work on mobo

Hi Chris, the problem can be one of two issues. If the sound jack located at the back of the PC did function at the same time as the front case sound jack. Than the problem is the jack it's self is bad. (Back of PC). Someone had to hook up the front mic & sound jack to the motherboard. So disconnecting the front sound & mic may give you rear sound & mic.
Turn to page 2-29 in you're user manual for the Asus M2N-SLI. The pic shown is the default setting for the front case audio & mic. (What you do see are the two jumpers connected). So disconnect any connector & place a jumper over pins 9 & 10, (last two pins at the right of the two rows of pins). Place another jumper over pins 5 & 6.
Pin 1 is the first pin on the left bottom row (MIC2). Pin 2 is the first pin, left edge top row (AGND). Pin 8 is not installed but you still count its spot as if there was a pin. (This is how the board was setup from factory). Once you fix this you should regain sound & mic function at the rear of the PC. To fine tune the audio run the Asus sound effect manager. If you installed this software, (Recommended). If it’s not by you're clock than it’s in control panel.

On board audio problem

Hi, do you have you're manual? The answer to you're questions are there.
There are three femal plugs on the back side of the motherboard for sound out-put/mic-output & sound in-put. There ia also the option (For most cases), front plugs. Sound = out & mic=out.
See page 2-22/2-23, for rear connectors (What goes where).
Goto to page 2-29 to see Front panel audio connector (10-1 pin FP_Audio).

If you do not have you're user manual you can download it from Asus. Click on the link below.

Front panel how too

Hi slider1958,
You want to connect the new case's front sound & mic.
Just about every case will come with a pre-assembled connector for front USB's & sound & mic. Your board has a set of ten pins used just for this. They are loacted just under the boards rear external sound / mic silver housing. Noted in your manual on pg. 15. Named AUDIO1.
def37da.jpg Notice there is one pin missing. Line your case connector to match.
The manual is uncleare if you are able to use both rear speaker & front speaker at the same time. I would think not. Newer boards with HD do allow this.

Good Luck & Kind Regards.
& please vote.
