Installing a Lacie Desktop Hard Drive on a W98 system
Since easrly 2005 I have been using a Lacie Hard Drive (Product code 300698U) on a Windows XP system - and love it.
I am trying to use this drive for a one time back up of an old IBM Aptiva system running W98. The Lacie software install starts running from your CD but suddenly halts with a
"APPS.INF MISSING - COPY FROM YOUYR STARTUP DISK INTO WINDOWS INF"
I cannot find this file anywhere. This is a one time situation - how can I get my Lacie hard drive to run on this antique W98 system? I have many digital photos that I want to save.

In regards to the drive not opening in your Windows XP system most likely you just need to assign it a drive letter. The link below will help you do that.
Let me know if you have any more problems or questions
The native file system for Macs is HFS. If the drive was originally used with a Mac, the current file system on the drive is HFS. Windows uses NTFS and is not compatible with HFS; which is why Windows doesn't recognize the drive as valid.
You can download a data retrieval tool called MacDrive that will give Windows the ability to speak Mac. There is a free trial available and it should be able to help you grab the files off of the drive.
I have the same issue, however with my verbatim 500g its ok. i believe it is because the lacie is a desktop external and therefore is compatable with windows xp and 7 alone. Verbatim is a "portable" external hard drive which makes it compatible with several different systems. I would suggest returning it, I just formatted my old verbatim harddrive and set up mediaasharing. Through my router. You can actually route the lacie harddrive by going to my computer and right click the icon. Next go to share with; advanced settings and allow all. Then when you turn your ps3 on search for media servers... I would suggest to google media server for ps3 to get it all seet up. GOOD LUCK
Some PC's cannot deliver enough power to the USB devices to function properly through the USB port.
Does your Lacie hard disk have a power input connector if so conect a power adapter to it before you put it into your USB port.
Another alternative, get a powered USB hub connect it into your computer then connect the Lacie hard drive to the powered USB hub.
All brand-new hard drives are sold unformatted and thus
don't show up in Windows until they've gone through the formatting process.
To get up and running, connect the drive, boot your PC, and at the Windows
desktop right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage. Click Disk
Management in the left-hand tree, and every drive connected to your system
will show up. Simply right-click your new drive and select New Partition.
Then follow the steps to get your drive up and running.
